"Is this labor?"

It's one of the most common questions during pregnancy.

While Braxton Hicks contractions are often irregular and may ease with rest, true labor contractions typically become more regular, stronger and closer together over time.

Every pregnancy is different. If you're unsure, have concerns or think labor may be starting, call your provider or come to the emergency department for evaluation.

This information applies to pregnancies at 37 weeks or later. Contractions before 37 weeks should be evaluated by a provider.

Every labor experience is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to managing labor pain.

At the SIH Birthing Center, expectant parents have access to a variety of pain management options, including comfort measures, epidurals, nitrous oxide and pain medication. The best choice depends on your individual needs, preferences and medical situation.

Talk with your OB provider or midwife about which option may be right for you before delivery. Having that conversation early can help you feel more prepared and confident when the big day arrives.

It's National Relaxation Day, and if you're preparing to welcome a baby, finding ways to stay calm and comfortable during labor can make a difference.

At SIH, laboring patients have access to comfort measures including birthing balls, peanut balls, hydrotherapy through whirlpool tubs and showers, calming background sounds and space for your favorite music or battery-operated diffuser. Plus, patients may have up to four visitors during labor, with a doula welcome in addition to those visitors.
