Some people never stop answering the call to care.

For Kathie Flowers, serving others isn't just a job, it's who she is.

A Southern Illinois native, Kathie has spent decades caring for her community. She serves as Assistant Fire Chief with the Zeigler Fire Department and as an Emergency Department nurse at SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, supporting people through some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Whether she's responding to an emergency or caring for a patient, her mission is the same: be present, offer compassion and make a difference.

"I'm proud to give back to the people of Southern Illinois because this is home."

Watch Kathie's story and discover why Your Care Lives Here.

Care doesn't stop when the workday ends. At SIH, it continues in the neighborhoods, schools and communities our employees proudly call home.

Amanda Duffy, Manager at the Enterprise Project Management Office, has spent the past 17 years serving on the Executive Committee of the Saint Andrew Catholic School PTO, helping create meaningful experiences for local families.

"In small towns like these, we are all working together to create a life. The support toward improving the health and well-being of all the people in these communities is larger than it seems. We are all in it together."

Whether she's grilling and serving hundreds of hot dogs at the annual Trunk-or-Treat or helping make sure every child leaves with plenty of candy, Amanda's impact reaches far beyond the workplace.

Your Care Lives Here.

🎓 Congratulations to the 2026 SIH High School Summer Intern Class!

After weeks of learning, mentoring and shadowing experiences across SIH, our high school summer interns officially graduated from the program.

This year's class was the largest in program history, with 52 students representing more than a dozen high school districts across Southern Illinois.

Throughout the summer, students explored a variety of healthcare careers through job shadowing experiences in more than 19 clinical departments, including the Birthing Center, Emergency Department, Surgery, Pathology, Radiology, Pharmacy, Imaging, Outpatient Rehabilitation and more. They also connected with SIH team members and gained real-world insight into what it takes to care for our communities.

We're proud of their hard work, curiosity and commitment to learning. Thank you to the SIH leaders, departments and mentors who helped make this experience possible.

Please join us in congratulating this outstanding group of students as they take the next step in their academic and professional journeys.

Stay tuned. We'll be sharing more from the interns themselves in the coming days.

ABOVE AND BEYOND

Recently, a patient was brought in to the Emergency Department at SIH Harrisburg Medical Center and it was determined he would need to be transported to another facility to receive surgery.

Despite the fast-paced emergency tensions and being flown out to another facility - Dr Clayborn Morris at SIH Harrisburg Medical Center made a point to call and check on the young patient to ensure he was doing okay and was being cared for.

The patient's parent told us "You truly do not get that kind of care from ER doctors. He truly went above and beyond for my son and I am very grateful."

For his attention to care and efforts to help, Dr. Morris has received the Physician Shining Star award!

We love to hear how our providers have cared for our patients. If you have a provider you'd like to nominate for the Shining Star award, you can nominate them at www.sih.net/hmc/hmc-home/nominate-your-nurse-or-caregiver/provider-shining-star-award

MEDICAL MYTH VS. FACT: How much water should you drink? (keep reading to see what our providers had to say about it)

Last week, we asked you how much water you THINK you should drink. We had answers ranging from 56 ounces per day to 75 ounces per day.

So what's the truth?

The truth is, there's not an exact answer that works for everyone; it depends on your age, medical history, activity level and heat exposure.

Dr. Korte at SIH Logan Primary Care Herrin says "There is no evidence-based research to support the 8 glasses of 8 ounces per day. Any sort of activity, exercise, exposure to heat, or illness increases the fluid need."

At SIH Primary Care Harrisburg, Dr Winkleman says "First rule of thumb: drink when you are thirsty. If you are working outside, exercising, sweating significantly, you probably need more."

And as Lisa Nation, NP, from our Inpatient Diabetes service, points out - your medical history plays a big factor too: "It’s variable depending on the person, age, activity level and other comorbid conditions but generally speaking 8-10 glasses per day."

Aren't sure how much you should hydrate, and want a medical opinion? Schedule an appointment with a provider at www.sih.net/providers
