"If I have osteoporosis or osteopenia, should I lift weights?"

It’s a very common concern—especially if you've been advised to take caution or are worried about fracture risks.

The short answer? Yes, but with the right approach!

Bones are living tissue, and they require mechanical loading and stress to stay strong and adapt. Eliminating all physical stress isn't the solution.

Instead of asking whether you should stress or protect your body, the real question is: What is the right training stimulus for YOU right now?

Why Personalization Matters:

Two people can share the same diagnosis but have completely different needs:

* Person A has strength-trained for 20 years, has great balance, and is very active.
* Person B hasn't been active in decades, has balance concerns, and has a history of fractures.

While the diagnosis is identical, their starting points are entirely different!

Our Approach: Assess, Personalize, & Progress

At The Med Gym, we evaluate your complete picture, including your medical history, current strength, balance, fall risk, and confidence level before building your routine.

We don't do random heavy lifting, nor do we stay static. You might start with sit-to-stands off a box, then progress over time to a bodyweight squat, a loaded goblet squat, and beyond, safely building strength, mobility, balance, and lifelong independence.

Today is World Food Day, and we are officially launching our community campaign at The Med Gym!

BEST PRACTICES: Small Daily Habits, BIG Impact!

We often focus on what we’re doing in the gym, but what about the other 23 hours of our day? Exercise is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to optimizing our health, energy, metabolism, and overall well-being!

We’re excited for our upcoming Best Practices Workshop on October 22 at 7:00 PM, where we’ll explore 10 foundational habits that can make a BIG difference in how we look, feel, and function every day. While we’ll touch on all 10 practices, here are five areas that deserve a little extra attention:

Morning Sunlight – Starting your day with natural light to support your circadian rhythm, healthy cortisol response, energy, and sleep.

Hydration – Why proper hydration is about more than just drinking water and how to support your body with the right balance of fluids and electrolytes.

Adequate Protein – Understanding how much protein your body actually needs to support muscle, metabolism, recovery, and healthy aging.

Quality Sleep – Why restorative sleep is one of the most overlooked pieces of the health puzzle and simple ways to improve it.

Stress Management & Nervous System Support – Learning practical parasympathetic techniques to help shift your body out of fight-or-flight mode and into rest, digest, and recovery.

The best part? These don’t have to be complicated changes! Sometimes it’s the small, consistent things we do every single day that create the biggest transformations over time.

Want to take it a step further?

Attending the workshop will also give you the opportunity to opt into our 6-Week Virtual Nutrition & Wellness Coaching Program (beginning the week of October 26), where we’ll dive deeper into these practices through three small-group sessions and one individual session.

If walking is part of your daily routine, please keep doing it!

Walking is fantastic for your heart, endurance, overall movement, and just feeling good. But if your goal is building strong bones to protect your independence as you age, walking on its own usually isn't enough.

Here’s why: your body is incredibly smart and adapts to whatever you ask it to do.

Think of it like picking up a 5-pound weight. At first, those reps challenge your muscles, and you get stronger. But if you lift that same 5-pound weight every day for five years, your body stops adapting because it’s no longer being challenged.

Walking works the same way. It’s great for maintaining where you are, but it won't force your bones and muscles to keep getting stronger.

To build true bone density, you need progressive resistance training exercises tailored to where you are today, with gradual challenges added over time.

So instead of just asking yourself, "Did I exercise today?"

Try asking: "What am I doing this week to train my bones and muscles to stay strong specifically?"

Keep up the walks, but pair them with a strength plan that gives your body the right stimulus to thrive.

If you're unsure how to start safely, we'd love to help. Check out the link below to sign up!

Think strength training is only for building muscle? Not exactly; let us explain why:

Bones are living tissue, not static frames, which means they adapt to stress just like muscles do. Wolff's Law says that putting targeted stress on your bones forces them to adapt and become stronger.

Why does all of this even matter?

As we age, losing bone density increases the risk of falls and fractures, which can compromise overall health and independence. An individualized, progressive strength training program helps strengthen both muscles and bones to protect long-term mobility, independence, and quality of life.

Train with intention, not random workouts; choose the right exercises at the right intensity, and progress over time.

Foam rolling can be a helpful way to ease muscle soreness and temporarily improve mobility, whether you’re targeting your quads, hamstrings, calves, glutes, or upper back. It works like a self-massage, using your body weight to apply pressure to the muscles.

Although it’s often described as “deep tissue stretching,” foam rolling isn’t the same as stretching. It may help you feel less stiff and more comfortable moving, but there’s limited evidence that it physically breaks up muscle knots or releases fascial adhesions. Think of it as a tool to move easier, not something that permanently changes the tissue.

Comfort matters. Firm pressure may feel good for one person and be too intense for another. Start gently, roll slowly, and adjust how much weight you place on the roller. More pain doesn’t mean more benefit, and being stiff isn’t a reason to force deeper pressure.

Focus on muscle rather than rolling directly over joints or bony areas, and stop if you feel sharp pain, numbness, or tingling. Avoid injured areas, open wounds, and known fractures. Foam rolling is an optional addition to your routine, not something you need to push through to get a good workout.

Enjoy David explaining a series of different rolling techniques, and feel free to try them out at home!

Deadlifts aren’t just about getting stronger in the gym. They can help support your bone health, too.

Your bones respond to the demands you place on them. By loading the hips and spine, deadlifts give your body a reason to maintain or build stronger bones. That makes them a useful part of an exercise program for people with osteopenia or osteoporosis.

They also strengthen the muscles that support everyday movement. Practicing a controlled hip hinge can help you build strength and learn how to lift with better spinal alignment.

You don’t need to jump straight into heavy lifting. Start with proper technique and gradually increase the challenge. If you have osteoporosis or a history of fractures, get individualized guidance to find a safe starting point. The goal is to build strength that supports you in living a better life.

Better in 60 Seconds: Half-Kneeling Setup
Half-kneeling is a great position for building core control, hip stability, and balance—but your setup matters.

Start with 90/90
Keep your front foot flat with your front knee bent at about 90 degrees.

Place your back knee directly under your hip.

Think railroad tracks, not a tightrope: keep your front foot and back knee about hip-width apart.

Stay tall with your ribs stacked over your hips.

Lightly brace your core and squeeze the glute on your kneeling side.

Avoid these mistakes
Too narrow: If your front foot is directly in line with your back knee, you may feel wobbly. Widen your stance slightly for a stronger base.

Low-back arch: Avoid letting your hips drift forward or your low back overarch. Keep your torso tall and your pelvis comfortably neutral.

Why it matters
A solid half-kneeling setup creates a stable base for presses, chops, and mobility work—helping you move with more control and less unwanted low-back compensation.

Quick reminder:
90/90 position. Railroad-track stance. Tall posture. Core engaged. Back glute active.

Waiting for the "perfect time" to prioritize your health is the easiest way to stay stuck. Life rarely slows down on command.

Wanna hear it from one of our clients? This is Cyndy's story.

Six years ago, she was recovering from a torn meniscus and severe knee pain. When physical therapy ended, she joined The Med Gym. Later diagnosed with osteoporosis, she didn't wait for ideal conditions; she used targeted weight training and balance exercises to build strength and manage her health with confidence.

You don’t need a blank calendar or perfect health to start. You just need to take the first step.

Final 5 Days: Fall Back to Fitness!

Our Fall Back to Fitness promotion ends September 30. Get 50% off your first month and start building a routine tailored to your body.
