“We are finding treatments that are both more effective and less toxic than previously. We’re seeing patients living longer, but they’re also able to enjoy life more. For many people, even though they are living with metastatic disease, the improvements in their survival are important. They’re able to lead very full and rich lives while being treated for advanced cancer.” 🙏🏽

Dana-Farber oncologist explains how the latest survival rate statistics compare to observations from the field.

“Two trends are colliding simultaneously: the share of men entering psychology has collapsed from roughly 80% in the 1960s to just 28% today. Over the same period, demand for male-specific mental health care has risen sharply. Su***de remains a predominantly male crisis. Depression in men is frequently misdiagnosed. And cultural factors continue to suppress help-seeking behavior — particularly when the available support system feels unfamiliar or misaligned.” The Center for Men's Excellence

Men make up 79% of su***de deaths but just 28% of psychologists. The Mirror Initiative is changing that — through scholarships, mentorship, and national dialogue.

The Lipstick Effect is an economic theory that lipstick sales rise in times of economic recession or hardship. Consumers swap luxurious purchases for smaller “pick me ups.” Commerce psychology makes sense of these lesser-priced affordable treats ($30) as mood boosters, while handbags, expensive shoes and dresses decline. After 9/11, lipstick sales surged while other retail sales plummeted.

The lipstick index is an economic theory that when consumers perceive a recession is looming, sales for “affordable luxury” items such as lipstick increase. Read on to learn more.

Childmind is a great (free!) resource. 🫶🏽

When children struggle with their behavior, it can have a negative impact on everyone in the family. Parents know they need to respond, but they often aren’t sure what’s the best strategy, especially if a child is frequently acting out and nothing seems to work. This guide offers parents a compr...

I was incredibly fortunate to train under Dr. Foa in 2009 at the La Jolla, VA. Her nature was intense, brilliant, and light years ahead of the industry.

Dr. Foa’s initial breakthrough work with Israeli soldiers is impossible to overstate. Developing Prolonged Exposure (PE), a gold standard in the care and treatment of post traumatic stress disorder, she pierced the veil with a bold understanding that trauma survivors must revisit the memory - smells, sounds, tastes - it could be shouldered, and, yes, there was a way to fully recover from a past event…no matter how horrific.

Prior to her radical approach, counselors were skittish to rattle patients in session with the details of a terrifying experience.
Foa knew that avoidance (“can’t go there”) made symptoms worse, and that the whole story needed to be met head on, in graphic and great detail, repeatedly, with a well trained clinician following a specific order of care and emotional processing.

Her teaching and trailblazing research (sexual assault, intimate partner violence) continued at the University of Pennsylvania; becoming the first-line treatment and well-supported methodology for PTSD.

Educating until just a few weeks ago, her passing at the age of 89.

Sometimes one person really can change the future for thousands of others.
My time with her and my colleagues is a highlight in my career.

May her memory be a blessing. 🕊️
