As of the week of Aug. 31, Indiana’s FSSA paused Medicaid waiver denials, determinations involving new assessments.

08/13/2026

Understanding Indiana’s New InterRAI Assessment.

Indiana is now using the InterRAI assessment as part of the process for determining eligibility and support needs for certain Medicaid waiver programs.

Families should know:

📌 A waiver denial is not the end. You have the right to appeal.

⏰ You have 33 days to appeal from the date you receive your denial notice. During the appeal process, individuals keep their waiver services.

👤 InterRAI is not artificial intelligence (AI). FSSA has clarified that it is an assessment tool, and waiver decisions are reviewed by people.

📝 Preparing for an assessment matter. Ask questions when something is unclear, listen carefully to all response choices, and make sure answers accurately reflect the individual's actual support needs and level of independence.

The Autism Society of Indiana understands that changes to waiver assessments can create uncertainty for families. Accurate assessments are essential to ensuring Hoosiers with disabilities receive the supports they need to live safely, successfully, and with greater independence in their communities.
