Hello there 👋 It’s been a while. A few months, actually.  I stopped posting in the middle of my 3-month road trip because I wasn’t enjoying the moments or the places I was in. I was worried about getting good pictures and content so that I could grow this account.

As I stopped posting, and moved farther away from the social media aspect of Well Read I was left wondering…why am I doing this? I didn’t have a good answer, but I knew that gaining followers WAS NOT IT.

I feel more comfortable with the notion that I’m changing and so is Well Read. Into what? I don’t know, but I’m ready to explore and play with detachment from my self worth.

This place, the internet, is a great place to express yourself but not to find value in yourself. Having taken a step back from this account, I found self-esteem through all of these things that don’t happen online:

• 8+ months of being alcohol free
• Teaching movement with /
• 1+ years of not eating animals/animal products
• Being a partner and friend

Glad to be back. With boundaries ❣️

A lot of questions crossed my mind as I woke up at a National Park for the first time on this cross-country trip:
-what will I do today?
-what is the weather going to be?
-are the goats near my van friendly? Swipe to see said goats➡️🐐
〰️
I was able to answer the questions above, but I have far more *big* questions swirling about my future, our collective future, the future or our planet 🌀 Then, this quote from Zora Neale Hurston came to mind (I read Their Eyes Were Watching God several times in college). I like answers. But Hurston's words remind me that sometimes you have them and sometimes you don't.
〰️
Has this been a year of questions or answers for you? Maybe a little of both? Virtual hugs from the road 🚗

I have now fully morphed into 🤪  because one week from today my partner and I are heading out on a 2+ month road trip of the continental US. We're not driving one of those instagram retrofitted vans, rather we'll be in full-fledged minivan 🚐
〰️
I was walking about 4 months ago and got an intuitive ping to travel the country and teach barre3 from the great outdoors. I'm so excited to do just that for ! A lot of things had to happen between then and now to make this happen. To keep it very real, below are some of the not-so-sexy but very necessary life admin that went into preparing:

•Update my health insurance plan
•Make a voting plan 🗳️
•Learn a new teaching format
•Save all my coins
•Spend countless hours researching gear, routes, and BEAR SAFETY🐻
•Move out of my apartment
•Sell anything that will help fund food and gas
〰️
I can't wait to bring this community on the road and figure out what Well Read events will look like and how offerings will continue to evolve 🧡 Onward.

Honored to be featured in 's September issue about how DC drinks in 2020🧉  Being listed as a *Change Maker* in the alcohol-free space feels a bit surreal, especially since I'm newer on the path and in such amazing company. You can read the full issue via the 🔗 in my bio.
〰️
I love how District Fray highlighted alcoholic and alcohol free ways to get your sip on. It shows that you have OPTIONS. You don't have to accept what you think others are expecting of you (in this arena or any other).
〰️
A wonderful side effect of alcohol free life is that my beverage game is now strong 💪🏼 Lately, yerba mate is my drink of choice. What are you sippin on?

How many people have thought of the following as the main milestones of adulthood?

✔️ Graduate
✔️ Get a job
✔️ Get married
✔️ Buy a house
✔️ Have kids

I have felt the pressure of this check-list. We see it in movies, on TV, in books. I know they don't mean any harm but my parents have been VERY explicit about their excitement about future grandchildren...😶
〰️
The 2017 data from the US Census Bureau (🔗 in profile) shows that milestones that were once ubiquitous in people's 20s are now being delayed until their 30s. What I take umbrage with is the term "delayed adulthood".
〰️
Unlike meeting weight and height milestones as children, these markers of adulthood feel like they aren't for everyone, yet there is pressure to meet them. Many of these milestones are associated with capital B big business (do not get me started on the marriage industrial complex)💰
〰️
While there isn't nothing wrong with wanting and working for all these things, I don't think there is anything wrong with NOT wanting any or all of them either. As our world shifts, I invite you to ask yourself, are these milestones for me?
〰️
How do you feel about these milestones? Are there any other markers that make you feel like an adult that aren't on this list? Share em down below 💬

It's been 105 days since I've had alcohol.
〰️
I keep this photo of bebe me on my fridge to remind me of who I made this choice for: me. I look at her arm rolls, her goofy spirit, her squinty smile and I love her. So much. I see enoughness. I lost that as I got older. Alcohol was just one of the tools I've used to seek validation, to numb myself.
〰️
I didn't personally have a rock bottom moment and I can't/won't speak for folks who have. Let's be honest, though, none of my best decisions came while drinking. I would mask feelings of insecurity with alcohol, never addressing them in earnest. Being alcohol free has brought me closer to the way I feel about myself in this photo: love.
〰️
I hesitated posting this, fearing I’d come off as preachy, but really I’m sharing about letting go of something that doesn’t serve me (that happens to be ubiquitous in our society). There are a lot of changes on my horizon and I will be making them with clarity and intention 💫

“if
the ocean
can calm itself,
so can you.
we
are both
salt water
mixed with
air.”waheed
〰️
I was *not* calm yesterday. Rather, a raging ocean of anxiety, my mind crashing from task to task. My partner explicitly asked that I stop what I was doing and sit down, noting I was frantic.
〰️
I love this poem from Nayyirah Waheed because the things that bring me back to baseline always include saltwater:

🌊   sweat from movement
🌊  a good cry

So I danced (inspo from & .with.camille) and moved my body for no one but me. I wonder, what calms yours waters?

AMBIGUOUS LOSS: any loss that’s unclear and lacks a resolution.
〰️
recently sent me an piece (🔗 in bio + on the Well Read site) that articulated why we continue to spiral downward the further into quarantine we go. I was reading, nodding along, and then read about ambiguous loss. BAM💥 It finally gave what I've been feeling a name. This loss ,"can be physical, such as a missing person or the loss of a limb or organ, or psychological, such as a family member with dementia or a serious addiction." The through line? There is no end in sight/a clear solution.
〰️
Right now, the loss for me is connection to others (I'm a physical touch love language gal 🤚). Does the idea of ambiguous loss resonate with you?
