Defensiveness isn't really about the topic. It's what we do when we feel like our character is on trial.

The second we feel accused, we stop listening and start building a case. Nobody in defense mode can also be curious. The two can't happen at once.

The way out is one hard sentence: "You might have a point." It doesn't mean you're all wrong. It means the connection matters more than being found innocent.

Like this if you armor up when criticized, and follow for more.

Resentment in relationships almost always builds the same way. You need something, your partner doesn't give it, you say nothing or say it indirectly, and the gap quietly widens. What starts as unmet expectations becomes a running tally of everything they're failing to be.

Accepting your partner's limitations isn't about lowering your standards. It's about being honest enough to communicate what you actually need, realistic enough to know that one person cannot be everything, and grounded enough to have other sources of connection in your life. Their weaknesses don't erase their strengths. And their limitations are often a product of wounds they're still carrying, not evidence that they don't care.

What they bring matters. Focus there first.

Shutting down is not always avoidance. Sometimes it is flooding, a real state where your heart rate climbs past the point where language works. So the silence is not defiance. It is capacity. The problem is that silence, unnarrated, feels identical to punishment. Telling them you are coming back turns a wall into a pause.

Read one of our past blogs on the importance of men's mental health

Toxic masculinity conditions men to suppress their feelings and causes problems when trying connect in an intimate relationship.

Research suggests that birth order can influence the roles we take on in our families, but it doesn’t determine our personality or our future. The oldest may learn responsibility, the youngest may become more adventurous, and middle children may develop incredible flexibility. But those are tendencies, not life sentences.

What matters far more are the relationships we experience, the way we’re parented, our temperament, and the challenges and opportunities that shape us over time.

The healthiest families don’t try to fit children into birth order stereotypes. They learn who each child is and parent the unique person in front of them.

👇 Tell me… what’s your birth order, and do you think it fits your personality?

Follow for more evidence based mental health and relationship content that helps you build healthier families and more.

Your triggers are trying to tell you something.

We move through life experiencing countless situations, conversations and interactions every day. Most pass by without much thought, but some evoke a strong emotional reaction. Maybe someone criticises you, doesn’t reply to your message, or says something that catches you off guard.

This is what we often call a trigger.

A trigger isn’t just the event itself, it’s the emotional response it creates within you. The intensity of that response is often linked to something much deeper than what’s happening in the present moment.

The next time you notice yourself feeling triggered, pause and ask yourself:

✨ What am I feeling right now?
✨ What story am I telling myself?
✨ What is this reaction trying to show me?

Instead of judging yourself for feeling this way, become curious.

Triggers often point to an unmet emotional need or a limiting belief that developed through past experiences.

For example, if someone doesn’t respond to your message and you immediately feel hurt or anxious, the trigger may not actually be about the delayed reply. It could be activating an old belief such as “I’m not important,” “I’m being rejected,” or “I’m not good enough.” The unmet need beneath that reaction may be to feel valued, secure or connected.

When you recognise what’s underneath the trigger, you create an opportunity to respond with awareness rather than reacting on autopilot.

Your triggers aren’t flaws to fix, they’re invitations to better understand yourself. The more compassion and curiosity you bring to them, the more freedom you have to respond differently.

Keep shining,

Dr. L ✨
