Sciatic Nerve: Why Does the Pain Travel Down the Leg?
From a chiropractic perspective, sciatic pain is often related to irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve caused by dysfunction in the lower back, pelvis, or surrounding muscles.
The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It originates in the lower spine, passes through the pelvis and glute region, and travels down the leg. Because of this long pathway, irritation in one area can create symptoms far from the actual source.
Patients may experience:
— lower back discomfort
— glute pain
— pain radiating down the leg
— tingling or numbness
— weakness or tightness
Common contributing factors may include:
• restricted spinal or pelvic movement
• disc irritation
• muscle tension
• poor posture or prolonged sitting
• altered movement mechanics
Chiropractic care focuses on improving joint mobility, reducing stress on the nervous system, and helping the body move more efficiently.
The pain is the symptom.
The cause is where the real work begins.
