πŸ’¬ Your voice, your choices, your rights!

AAC is about more than sharing wants and needs. It's also about self-advocacy: expressing opinions, setting boundaries, asking for help, saying β€œno,” and making choices about your own life.

Every AAC user deserves the opportunity to speak up, be heard, and have their communication respected. πŸ’™

It’s AAC Spotlight time! Today, we’re sharing insights from Rhys, who is an AAC user: "I am a very big fan of the actor Chadwick Boseman and the original Black Panther film, I learned how to add film quotes to my AAC device, for example, I like to use this film phrase: β€œhow are you feeling today” as used by the character TChalla in the film. I like to greet people with the phrase.

My wish is for people to understand that everyone with AAC is equal.

My inspiring AAC moment is adding Chadwick Boseman’s TChalla voice to my touch chat app and using it for self expression."

🎲 Pause, play, and make space for communication!

Predictable play routines create natural opportunities for AAC users to participate, anticipate what's next, and share their ideas. Try pausing during a familiar activity to give time and space for the AAC user to contribute in their own way.

Remember: waiting creates an opportunity, not an obligation. πŸ’¬

πŸ—£οΈ Communication partners make a difference!

You don't have to be an AAC expert to be a supportive communication partner. Model AAC, allow plenty of wait time, acknowledge all forms of communication, and make space for messages beyond what you expect or want to hear.

Connection comes first. Keep learning, keep listening, and keep communicating! πŸ’™

πŸ’¬ A little language goes a long way!

Recasting and expanding are simple ways to support language development throughout the day. Build on what an AAC user communicates by responding naturally to their message and adding a word or modeling a phrase.

πŸ“š There's more than one way to learn AAC!

AAC users benefit from both implicit learning (learning through meaningful experiences and repeated exposure) and explicit instruction (direct teaching and guided practice).

The goal isn't to choose one approach over the other. It's to provide rich communication experiences and the support each individual's needs to grow! 🌱
