Falls are the leading cause of serious injury for older adults. But the number that should really get our attention is what happens after.
The fear. A person who has fallen once often starts moving less, which weakens the muscles that were keeping them upright in the first place. Less movement leads to less balance, which leads to more risk. It is a loop, and it is quietly one of the fastest ways an independent person loses their independence.
