**From Bucket Brigades to Boxing Glory: Picayune Celebrates a Champion’s 70th Birthday**

PICAYUNE, Miss. — Legends do not always live under bright arena lights or behind velvet ropes. Sometimes, they live quietly in small towns, surrounded by neighbors who know their greatness long before the rest of the world catches on.

That spirit filled the halls of St. Oaks Care Center recently as friends, family, local supporters, and fighters from Gold Dragon MMA gathered to celebrate the 70th birthday of boxing legend Gary Ray Vinet.

The atmosphere carried the warmth of a family reunion mixed with the reverence of a Hall of Fame tribute. Young fighters stood shoulder-to-shoulder with veterans of the sport, listening to stories about a man whose life reads like a page ripped straight from boxing folklore.

Originally from the Lafitte and Crown Point area of Louisiana, Vinet’s journey began long before championship stories and legendary sparring sessions with the best of the best. During the Vietnam Era, he proudly served in the United States Navy, traveling through the Panama Canal, along the west coast of South America, Trinidad, and throughout NATO Atlantic operations.

Even then, greatness followed him.

Vinet was selected as “Outstanding Recruit” by his Commanding Officer, who praised him for demonstrating “exemplary qualities of leadership” along with “initiative, perseverance and devotion to duty.”

Those same qualities would later define his boxing career.

Gary first stepped into the boxing world in the late 1960s with the Westside Boxing Club under Al and Janet Boudreaux. It did not take long for his father, Joe Vinet, to recognize the potential burning inside his son. Inspired to help neighborhood boys find discipline and purpose through the sport, Joe founded the Lafitte Boxing Club on Isle Bonne Road.

It was not glamorous.

The club fought for every ounce of success. Coaches, fighters, relatives, and volunteers organized fundraisers constantly just to keep the dream alive. Members often stood in the medians of the West-Bank Expressway during “Bucket Brigades,” collecting spare change from passing drivers to buy boxing equipment and fund travel expenses to tournaments.

And travel they did!

One unforgettable journey took the entire club to the Colorado and Wyoming region, where fighters, coaches, and volunteers camped high in the mountains, sleeping in tents and embracing the rugged wilderness together. There is a mountain lion story involved, but I will let Gary tell that one himself!

“We always returned home with victories, trophies and enormous glee,” Vinet recalled with a laugh.

Gary Vinet’s relentless drive and natural ability eventually earned him recognition as a **Golden Gloves Champion**, cementing his reputation as one of the toughest and most respected fighters to emerge from Louisiana’s boxing scene.

But Vinet’s story did not stop at regional success.

He eventually trained under legendary boxing coach Angelo Dundee, best known as the iconic trainer of Muhammad Ali. Along the way, Vinet also became a sparring partner for none other than Sugar Ray Leonard, one of the greatest boxers in history.

For many athletes, those accomplishments alone would define a lifetime.

Yet during the birthday celebration in Picayune, it became clear that the people surrounding Vinet admired more than his boxing pedigree. They honored his toughness, humility, leadership, and enduring spirit. And he is a VERY funny guy with a million dollar smile!!!

Members of Gold Dragon MMA paid tribute not only to an old warrior, but to a living bridge between generations of combat sports. Younger fighters listened closely as old stories floated through the room like smoke from a championship arena decades ago. Respect.

Every scar had a story.

Every laugh carried history.

And every handshake reminded everyone present that greatness is not measured only in titles or trophies, but in the lives inspired along the way. From one old veteran to another, a crisp salute to you, Mr. Gary. I was so honored to be trusted to help tell this amazing fighters story. And I am better for it.

At 70 years old, Gary Ray Vinet remains exactly what he has always been:

A fighter.

A mentor.

A Golden Gloves Champion.

An absolute legend that lives right here in Picayune. 🥊

Happy birthday Mr. Gary
