Beans may be one of the most underrated foods in your kitchen.

A staple in Hispanic and Latino cuisines for generations, beans are packed with protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals that support heart health, blood sugar management and digestive wellness. They're also affordable, versatile and delicious.

In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, our latest blog explores the nutritional benefits of beans, their cultural significance across Latin America, and includes a flavorful Puerto Rican-style Habichuelas Guisadas recipe you can make at home.

The Reason Is You: Nicholas Ingram, DO

Nicholas Ingram, DO, a physician in Torrance Memorial’s Emergency Department, is our latest Physician Reason Is You honoree.

A patient undergoing cancer treatment nominated Dr. Ingram after coming to the Emergency Department in severe pain. During an especially difficult moment, his kindness, understanding and reassurance helped the patient feel calmer and able to keep moving forward.

“Thank you for genuinely caring about me as a person,” the patient wrote. “I will always be grateful he was there.”

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Ingram and thanking him for the compassionate care he provides our patients.

The Reason is You award is sponsored by the Torrance Memorial Foundation's Young Physicians and Professionals Alliance (YPPA) and recognizes those who provide the very best patient experience through their extraordinary and compassionate communication, behavior or teamwork.

Read insights from Torrance Memorial cardiac electrophysiologist Matthew Ostrom, MD, on AFib detection, wearable ECGs, sleep tracking, false alarms and how these devices may help identify potential health concerns.

Small movements add up. Your future self—and probably your back—will thank you.

Flu season is approaching, and now is the ideal time to get vaccinated.

A flu shot won't eliminate your risk entirely, but it can significantly reduce your chances of severe illness, hospitalization, and other serious complications. That's especially important for older adults, young children, pregnant individuals, and those with chronic health conditions.

Protect yourself before flu activity starts to increase. Talk with your healthcare provider or schedule your flu vaccination today.

National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15–October 15) celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities.

It’s also an opportunity to talk about health. National data show disparities in diabetes, colorectal cancer screening and access to insurance. Barriers such as cost, language and difficulty finding care can make it harder to address health concerns.

This month, start a conversation with someone you love: What conditions run in our family? Are we up to date on recommended screenings? Is anything making it difficult to get care?

Encourage loved ones to share their concerns with a health care professional. Listening and helping someone take that next step can make a difference.
