Summer is finally here! It’s the season for backyard barbecues, pool days, and making unforgettable memories. But before you dive into the fun, let’s make sure your family stays safe and healthy all season long.
First, beat the heat by drinking plenty of water. Kids active outdoors need to hydrate often—even before they feel thirsty. Take regular breaks in the shade to cool down and prevent heat exhaustion.
Next, shield your skin. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen before heading out, and protect against bugs. Use an EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin to keep mosquitoes and ticks away. Avoid outdoor activities at dawn and dusk when pests are most active, and check everyone for ticks after playing in wooded or grassy areas.
When heading to the water, always designate an adult to closely supervise swimmers, even if a lifeguard is on duty. And if your summer adventures include wheels, make sure everyone wears a properly fitted helmet for every bike, scooter, or skateboard ride.
Stay safe, protect your family, and enjoy a healthy summer!
