You may have seen recent news regarding the President’s August 10 Executive Order related to childhood vaccines. We want our Western Wake Pediatrics families to know that nothing has changed for us at this time.

Vaccines remain widely available throughout North Carolina, and NC DHHS continues to strongly support vaccination as an important tool for protecting children, families, and our communities from preventable diseases.

At Western Wake Pediatrics, our position remains clear: vaccines save lives.

We will continue to follow the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and NC DHHS and provide your family with evidence-based guidance about vaccines.

The AAP immunization schedule is carefully developed from extensive research and safety data. It considers immune response, timing, effectiveness, and the safety of giving vaccines together at recommended ages.

Our goal is to help you make informed decisions about your child’s health based on evidence, research, and safety—not politics or personal agendas.

If you have questions or concerns about your child’s vaccines, please talk with your child's provider. We’re here to help you navigate the information and feel confident in your child’s care.

Summer means more time at the pool, lake, and beach—and it’s a great time to think about your child’s swimming skills and water safety. 💦

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends swim lessons as one important layer of protection against drowning, with many children able to begin lessons around age 1, depending on their developmental readiness.

A few important reminders for families:

🏊 Swim lessons don’t make children “drown-proof.” Constant, close, and focused adult supervision is still essential.

👶 Children develop at different rates. Consider your child’s physical abilities, developmental readiness, emotional maturity, and comfort in the water when deciding when to begin.

🛟 Look for water-survival skills—not just swimming strokes. A quality program should teach children how to get to the surface, move through the water, and safely get out.

👀 For little ones, think “touch supervision.” Infants and toddlers should always be within arm’s reach of an adult when they are in or around water—even during swim lessons.

🚫 Prevent unsupervised access. Pool fencing and barriers are especially important because young children can wander toward water when no one expects them to be swimming.

💙 Water safety is a family affair. Swim lessons, active supervision, life jackets, barriers, and knowing CPR all work together to help keep children safer around water.

August is a time to celebrate, support, and advocate for breastfeeding families everywhere. At WWP, we're proud to provide compassionate, evidence-based feeding support because every family's feeding journey deserves encouragement, respect, and access to the resources they need.

Throughout the month, we'll be recognizing several important observances that highlight the diverse communities, cultures, and organizations working to improve breastfeeding support for all families:

August 1–7: World Breastfeeding Week & National WIC Breastfeeding Week
A global celebration focused on protecting, promoting, and supporting breastfeeding while recognizing the importance of equitable access to lactation care and support.

August 8-14: Indigenous Milk Medicine Week
Honoring Indigenous knowledge, traditions, and community-led efforts to reclaim and celebrate breastfeeding as a source of health, culture, and connection.

August 15–21: Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Breastfeeding Week
Celebrating the unique experiences, cultures, and traditions of AANHPI families while raising awareness of the importance of culturally responsive breastfeeding support.

August 25–31: Black Breastfeeding Week
Celebrating Black families, amplifying Black voices, and raising awareness of the disparities that exist while advocating for equitable breastfeeding support and healthier outcomes.

The American Academy of Pediatrics announced that the U.S. has reached a concerning new milestone: Johns Hopkins University reports that U.S. measles cases have hit a 35 year high, recording more cases of the virus in 2026 than in all of 2025 — and we're only halfway through the year. This milestone is a reminder that vaccine-preventable diseases can return when immunization rates decline.

Measles is highly contagious and can lead to serious complications, especially for young children. There is no telling if a child will develop serious illness from measles, so vaccination remains the best way to protect children and communities.

The AAP recommends all children stay up to date on their MMR vaccination to prevent measles.

For the third summer in a row, Dr. Hannon happily spent a week volunteering as a camp doctor at Camp Seafarer. From singing camp songs in the dining hall to sailing on the Neuse River to eating a lot of popsicles, Dr. Hannon had so much fun (and also took care of a few injuries and illnesses).
