🚨 COMING SOON! 🚨
Prenatal breastfeeding education is vital in establishing the confidence and knowledge needed to meet your breastfeeding goals. Many parents wait until baby’s arrival to research breastfeeding basics such as proper latch, positioning, or feeding baby on demand. Knowing what to expect before baby is born will help to alleviate the challenges that may arise during the early postpartum period.
We will offer a “Breastfeeding Basics” course one time per month that will highlight many of the questions and concerns associated with the early days of feeding your baby, starting in September!
The course will be instructed by our very own, International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant, Emerald Rice, that has a goal of helping you reach YOUR goals. Congratulations on your upcoming new arrival and we look forward to seeing you soon! 🎉💙🩷

What is Engorgement?
Engorgement occurs when milk volume increases around 3 days postpartum or when milk is not removed often enough. Engorgement presents as firmness or painful swelling of the breasts but can also feel “hot” and hard to the touch. Engorgement can be alleviated by nursing/pumping often, applying warm compresses before feeding and cold compresses after feeding, gently massaging breast and using pain relievers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Contact your doctor if engorgement does not improve with self-care, if a fever develops over 101degrees, or if signs of infection or mastitis are present.

How do I know if my baby is satisfied?
"When nursing your baby on demand, it may be difficult to know when your baby is satisfied. If baby is at the breast but is not active, many parents are not able to discern when baby is full. Signs to note are audible swallows (1 swallow for every 1-3 sucks), jaw movement while feeding and breasts softening when the feed is completed. Babies are typically the most active during the first 10-15 minutes of feeding, so nursing unclothed and stimulating baby throughout the feed will ensure that transfer is maximized. Baby should be content after feeding, showing no signs of hunger such as rooting or crying and nurse, on average, every 2-3 hours."
