Happy Friday!
Caregivers 24/7 here to chat with you about the dangers of hiring a caregiver on your own.
Hiring a caregiver for an aging parent is a high-stakes decision. While platforms like Care.com offer convenience and a wide selection, they often create a false sense of security for families.
When you hire direct through these sites, you aren't just the employer, you are the primary investigator and the risks of a bad hire are very significant.
📍The Illusion of the Background Check
Most online platforms offer tiered background checks, but these are often insufficient for senior care:
⚠️Limited Scope: Basic checks usually only search national criminal databases, which are notoriously incomplete and rely on self-reported data.
⚠️No Fingerprinting: Unlike agency-level screenings, online checks rarely use fingerprinting to verify identity, making it easier for individuals to hide past aliases.
⚠️State Lines: Many basic checks fail to capture crimes committed in different states or counties if the caregiver has moved frequently.
📍The Missing Drug Screening
One of the most overlooked dangers is the lack of mandatory drug testing:
⚠️Medication Theft: Seniors often have access to narcotics and painkillers. A caregiver with an undisclosed substance use disorder may divert these medications for personal use.
⚠️Impaired Judgment: Caregiving requires split-second reactions during falls or medical emergencies. An impaired caregiver puts the senior at immediate physical risk.
⚠️No Ongoing Monitoring: Even if a caregiver provides an old drug test result, online platforms do not conduct the random or "for cause" testing that professional agencies do.
📍Financial and Legal Vulnerabilities
Hiring independently through a website shifts all liability onto the family:
⚠️No Worker’s Comp: If a caregiver injures their back while lifting your loved one... you, the homeowner, may be liable for their medical bills and lost wages.
⚠️The "Nanny Tax": Families often realize too late that they are responsible for payroll taxes, social security, and unemployment insurance.
⚠️Lack of Supervision: Without an RN supervisor and/or agency care manager, there is no second set of eyes to spot signs of elder abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation.
If you choose to use self-guided caregiver sites, consider hiring a private investigator to run a professional-grade background check and requiring a 10-panel drug screen at a local clinic before your caregiver begins their first day of work.
