For Dr. Kelly Barnes, optometry is all about connection. Since opening the doors to our practice in 2008, her favorite part of the job has been watching our surrounding communities and patients' families grow and change over the years.

Originally from Reading, Pennsylvania, Dr. Barnes earned degrees in both Biology and Spanish from the University of Scranton before completing her Doctor of Optometry degree at Southern College of Optometry. Her extensive training includes a semester abroad in Segovia, Spain, a medical mission trip to Costa Rica, and a residency at Dimock Community Health Center in Roxbury, Massachusetts.

As she puts it, it never gets old seeing a child start smiling behind the phoropter when they see what the world is supposed to look like.

Dr. Barnes resides right here in Cary with Dr. Dwight Barnes and their two children, Nathan and Ella. In her free time, you can find her reading or planning her next travel adventure.

Dr. Barnes is currently accepting both English and Spanish-speaking new patients! Click the link in our bio to schedule your family's next visit with her.

Maximum sun safety requires looking beyond just a standard pair of sunglasses during the brightest months of the year. Overhead sunlight can easily bounce over the top of your eyewear, reducing your visual clarity and causing unnecessary muscle tension.

What you gain by pairing a hat, your shades, and a great SPF:

✨ Total Glare Elimination: Shading your eyes from above allows your polarized lenses to work at their absolute peak performance.

πŸ”₯ Complete Skin Defense: Protecting the skin on your face is an essential step in protecting your eyes from UV damage. We just stocked the new Elta MD UV Skin Recovery SPF in-store! It comes in both clear and a redness-canceling green tint to keep your skin calm and shielded.

🎯 Crisp Visual Contrast: Removing stray light improves your depth perception and makes colors look vibrant and sharp.

Upgrade your summer gear with a high-coverage look that keeps your eyes and skin fully protected. β˜€οΈ

A child’s glasses getting noticeably thicker every single year is a clear sign that their myopia is actively progressing. Think of myopia management as a protective time machine for your child’s eyes, using specialized treatments to slow down the physical elongation of the eye before it impacts their future.

Why getting ahead of nearsightedness matters for their adult life:

πŸ‘“ Lower Prescriptions: Actively slowing the progression keeps their lenses significantly thinner and their natural vision much clearer.

πŸ›‘οΈ Healthier Eyes: Keeping the prescription lower dramatically reduces their lifetime risk of serious conditions like retinal detachment and glaucoma.

πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ Lifestyle Freedom: Managing myopia early gives them more comfort and flexibility for sports, hobbies, and daily school activities.

Stop waiting for the next stronger pair of glasses and take control of their visual health today.

The summer screen-time spike is officially here, but your child's developing eyes need a healthy dose of natural sunlight. Outdoor light triggers an essential dopamine release in the retina, which acts as a powerful, natural brake to slow down myopia progression.

Why outdoor play is a summer priority:

β˜€οΈ Natural Growth Control: Sunlight actively helps prevent the eye from elongating too quickly, protecting their long-term vision health.

🌳 Visual Variety: Playing outside forces their eyes to practice focusing at long distances, giving them a much-needed break from close-up screen strain.

πŸ”‹ Physical Reset: Swapping tablet time for outdoor activities builds full-body health while giving their visual system time to relax.

Balance the digital devices with plenty of fresh air and sunshine to protect their future sight.

A successful school year starts long before the first bell rings, and ensuring your child can see perfectly is step number one. Children depend heavily on their visual system to absorb information, so catching changes early keeps them from falling behind.

What a comprehensive exam provides:

🎯 Peak Alignment: We look beyond basic sight to ensure their eyes track smoothly together across a printed page or screen.

πŸ›‘οΈ Early Protection: Catching hidden functional issues ensures your child will not spend the first semester struggling with headaches.

🎨 Framework for Success: Crisp vision directly supports better coordination, faster reading comprehension, and happier learning habits.

Set them up for a safe and completely stress-free transition into their next grade.

Squinting is often dismissed as just a natural part of a bright summer day, but it is actually a clear sign that your eyes are in a state of constant overexertion. When your sunglasses fail to provide adequate protection, your brain forces your facial muscles to tighten just to block out the excess glare.

How professional-grade lenses change your summer:

β˜€οΈ Zero Muscle Strain: Proper polarization acts as an instant relief button, allowing your eyes and forehead to stay completely relaxed.

🧠 No Mid-Afternoon Fog: Eliminating repetitive facial tension stops those painful summer headaches before they start.

πŸ›‘οΈ True Eye Protection: Premium lenses filter out harmful rays instead of forcing your eyes to do all the heavy lifting.

Give your eyes a much-needed break from the harsh July glare.

Standard glasses are great for focusing your sight, but they cannot always fix how your eyes and brain actually work together. When your visual system gets out of sync, it creates a silent struggle with reading comprehension, balance, and daily focus.

Why functional vision training makes a difference:

πŸ‘οΈ Dynamic Treatment: We treat the eye as an active system to fix the root cause of tracking and alignment issues.

🧠 Zero Mental Fog: Building your visual stamina eliminates the exhaustion that comes from daily screen strain.

πŸ“ˆ Life Performance: Improved coordination directly boosts everything from your work productivity to sports reactions.

Take a proactive step toward comfortable, clear vision today.
