A Visit from the Egret — Stillness, Patience & Grace
We recently had the opportunity to watch an egret at a local lake and it inspired us to write this post.
A little about the egret:
Egrets are long-legged wading birds closely related to herons. They are often found around wetlands, ponds, lakes, marshes, and slow-moving waterways, where they patiently hunt for fish, frogs, insects, and other small creatures. Rather than constantly moving in search of food, an egret may remain motionless for surprisingly long periods, watching and waiting before making a precise strike.
Metaphysical symbolism:
Stillness & Presence: The egret reminds us that not every moment requires action. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is become still, observe, and allow clarity to come to us.
Patience & Timing: An egret doesn't rush its opportunity. It waits until the moment is right. Spiritually, this can represent trusting divine timing rather than forcing an outcome.
Grace & Balance: With its long legs and elegant movements, the egret can symbolize maintaining balance while moving through changing emotional and energetic waters.
Purification & Renewal: Its brilliant white plumage is often associated symbolically with purity, cleansing, clarity, and the release of what no longer serves us.
Water Element: Because egrets spend so much of their lives at the water's edge, they can also be viewed as creatures that move between the worlds of emotion, intuition, and conscious awareness. They stand at the boundary between solid ground and flowing water—a beautiful metaphor for learning to remain grounded while allowing ourselves to move with our intuitive nature.
In shamanic and metaphysical work, animal encounters can sometimes feel like more than simply crossing paths with wildlife. Whether you see the egret as a spiritual messenger, a symbolic reflection, or simply a magnificent bird enjoying its environment, its presence offers a beautiful reminder to be still; observe; trust your timing; and move when the moment is right.
