Stretching comes up in almost every massage session with my clients. It's so important in maintaining range of motion.
But what constitutes good, effective stretching?
STRETCH Which stretches will benefit the muscles in which you feel discomfort? When and how often should you stretch? How will you make stretching a habit that you integrate into your schedule so that it becomes a natural part of your day and not just another chore to check off of your to-do list (because if you don't make it an integral part of your life, it will quickly fall by the wayside.)
BE PRESENT When we stretch, our whole self should be there in the action of stretching. Don't think about all the stuff you need to get done. Don't think about your problems. Notice what is happening in your body. Where is there tension? Focus on releasing that tension. How do your muscles feel as they release tension? Do you feel them getting longer? If it's a bilateral stretch, does one side of your body release more quickly than the other? Your mind, present in the action of stretching, will produce much better results. A bonus: this is a form of meditation that relaxes body AND mind!
BREATHE Does that sound strange, to be reminded to breathe? I mean, we do it 24/7 right? Not really. Have you noticed how often you hold your breath? We often hold our breath when stretching, and that keeps our muscles restricted and we don't get the good deep stretch we are looking for. Breathe deeply for 4 counts through the nose and out for 4 counts through the mouth and you will find that your body naturally sinks more deeply into the stretch.
Approach your stretching with intention and reap huge benefits. Your body and mind will thank you for it!
