1. Will the shelter allow me to foster? Unless you are an approved foster who has completed the county's foster training class, the answer is sadly no.
2. Does the shelter require I come into the shelte

r to adopt? Yes, although due to Covid the shelter is currently closed and adoptions or “meet and greets” are by appointment only. If you are out of state and can find a 501(c)3 rescue who is an adoption partner of the Los Angeles County shelter system (DACC) they will be able to pull the pet for you.
3. Does the Castaic Shelter ship animals? No, the shelter doesn’t have the budget or manpower to ship animals.
4. Is the Castaic Shelter a "no kill" shelter? The shelter is far from a "no kill" shelter. The staff does not want to euthanize any animals - but unfortunately the shelter's intakes far exceed the adoptions. Castaic Shelter is not a rescue so please be aware that if you surrender an animal it may not get adopted.
5. Can you help and if so how? If you are local you can sign up for the volunteer training program, but volunteer training is currently on hold due to Covid. You can always help us by networking and sharing our animals. If you wish to donate to our charitable arm, the "Dreams Come True" charity which provides outside medical help to pets at the Castaic Animal Care Center, you can do so by sending a tax deductible check to the shelter. No donation is too small! This page promotes the adoption and rescue of pets from the Castaic Shelter. All dogs and cats who are included in this album are at the Castaic Shelter and urgently in need of adoption or rescue.

🚨 URGENT: Taz was given a 72-hour notice 🚨

Taz is only 5 years old, and right now, this sweet boy desperately needs someone to see him.

Behind the kennel gate is an affectionate, social German Shepherd who just wants to be close to people. During his playgroup assessment, Taz calmly entered the yard and exchanged soft greetings with several dogs. He remained social regardless of the other dogs’ energy levels and was tolerant of a playful female shepherd, although he seemed much more interested in calmly exploring than joining in the fun ❤️

But the part that really gets us? Taz repeatedly sought affection from his handlers, nudging their hands when he wanted them to keep petting him 🥺

This sweet boy reaches out for affection—and now he desperately needs someone to reach for him.

Taz is approved for public adoption, has a medium energy level, and the shelter recommends calm canine companions.

His time is running out. Please don’t assume someone else will save him. Share him. Tag your shepherd-loving friends. And if you think Taz could be your dog, please contact the shelter as soon as possible 🙏🏻

Hey Fishermen! 🎣 Don’t miss this catch of a lifetime! Trout, available right here in Castaic! Trout, , came in as a stray and is listed as a 3 year old, 46 pound male Pitbull. We are still getting to know him but we think he’ll be a great catch. He is working on obedience and leash skills and is treat motivated. Staff said Trout has medium energy and is ok with large dogs.

💔 Irma shouldn’t have to spend her days behind these bars.

At just 2 years old, Irma is a sweet, social girl waiting for someone to see past the kennel and give her the chance she deserves.

And there’s so much more to Irma than what you see behind that gate❤️

During her playgroup assessment, Irma entered the yard with soft body language, exchanged gentle greetings with the other dogs, and even offered a play bow before settling into some gentle, dainty play. She remained social and playful throughout her time in the yard and regularly approached the handlers to seek affection.

She’s young. She’s affectionate. She’s social with other large dogs. And she has her whole life ahead of her.

All she needs is someone to choose her 🥺

Please share Irma and help us get her face in front of the person who might be waiting for a girl just like her 🫶🏻

Help 💔 Loki is a handsome 6-year-old Labrador/Pit Bull mix who was first brought in because his family welcomed a new baby and a family member developed allergies 🤧 and was recently returned for not liking the cat in the home 🏠
Although the second adopter said he is amazing ✨ He is dog friendly.
Volunteers who have spent time with Loki consistently describe him as a sweet, gentle, and affectionate dog. At a recent adoption event, he remained calm and relaxed while surrounded by children, families, and plenty of activity. In the shelter play yard, he happily played with toys, sought out affection, and showed off his easygoing personality.

Loki has a nice medium energy level—happy to enjoy a walk or some playtime, then settle in for quality time with his people.

According to his previous family, Loki:
🐾 Is house-trained
🐾 Loves car rides and dog parks
🐾 Knows cues like sit, lay, and paw
🐾 Has lived with young children
🐾 Is described as “very kind” and a wonderful family dog

Dogs like Loki often get overlooked simply because they’re quiet and well-mannered in the shelter. But sometimes those are the very dogs who make the best companions.

Working Like a Dog! Working Dog = Playing Dog. When we identify dogs with working potential, we put them to the test. Flower had a great time! We will create a résumé and see if there is interest, but in the mean time Flower is available for adoption! What a fun girl! Her only requirements are toys, a pool, a yard, and a playmate! Is that you? Flower engaged in gentle/dainty play with other similar size pups in playgroup. However adopter will be required to sign a History of Known Aggression form due to human who surrendered her reporting she attacked a small dog. Flower is listed as a 1.5 year old, 48 pound female Belgian Malinois. She is a Beauty!

“Family Friendly!” Loki’s family had so many nice things to say and were heart broken they could not take him where they moved. Loki has been around kids and small dogs. Loki is housebroken and has basic commands. He is calm indoors and playful outdoors. He plays fetch. Loki is a great pet! Loki is listed as a 7 year old, 45 pound Siberian Husky. Come fall in love and Loki may even say “I Love You!” 💘
