Pregnant and working around radiation? How much protection is actually required?

Is a 0.5 mm lead apron required? Does the fetal area need 1.0 mm protection? Can a pregnant technologist continue working around X-ray and fluoroscopy?

We wanted answers based on authoritative sources—not assumptions.

Our new article examines information from the NRC, OSHA, NCRP, ICRP, CRCPD, SIR, and FDA to explain occupational fetal dose limits, pregnancy declaration, fetal monitoring, protective apparel, and what these organizations actually say about working around radiation during pregnancy.

One of the most important takeaways: radiation protection requirements during pregnancy focus heavily on limiting occupational dose to the embryo/fetus. We did not find a universal federal requirement specifying that every pregnant radiation worker must wear a 0.5 mm or 1.0 mm Pb-equivalent maternity apron.
