We use a lot of different cues in speech therapy. This is an example of a tactile cue. It’s a reminder through touch to include the long “S” sound in s-clusters in this case. We call it our “SParkly SNake”. 🤗 It’s always exciting when a child reports they don’t need the sparkly snake anymore. 🙌🏻

Things I heard/saw this week that remind me I have the best career in the world:

1. “Hee-hee!” (in Michael Jackson’s voice as he hopped onto his toes)
2. “I’ll miss you!” (as she hugged me around me legs before going on vacation)
3. “Why would you ask if you already know?” (in response to me trying to hurry the puzzle along by asking, “I wonder if that piece goes right here?”)
4. “Okay, tooty booty” (that’s a new one)
5. “I want to tell you something but it’s a secret….okay, okay, I’m getting my ears pierced!” (don’t tell her any secrets)

I’m sure I’m missing a few. 😅😂❤️

Speech therapy is often a long road. You might see quick results with sounds in isolation and words, but breaking old habits to use the correct sounds in sentences and conversation can be a trek.

I was nearly brought to tears this afternoon when I heard a client use some sounds she’s been working on for almost a year accurately in conversation and without a second thought.

It might be a long road, but it’s totally worth it. ❤️

What are those symbols you might notice in your child's speech and language therapy documentation? It's the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)! It's a system SLPs use to transcribe speech by sound. For example, the letters "th" could be voiceless, like in "mouth", or voiced like in "that". We need separate symbols to represent the different way those sounds are produced to make sure we're accurately documenting how children are producing sounds.

Here’s a brief introduction to a vocabulary application on a communication device. This one can be a bit overwhelming, so I highlight the feature of hiding a lot of the words while a child is familiarizing themselves with the application.
