If you can’t tell, I love the staRt app 😂 I find it’s one of the most useful tools for older kids with residual /r/ errors.

Sometimes (but not always), we get lucky and holding out the initial /r/ results in a decent /er/ sound. This one still needs some tweaking, but as we’ve been using the app, this kid has been able to see when they need to raise the back of their tongue (instead of just the tip, which has been their default). I love how the visual representation makes it easier for kids to understand what their tongue is doing 👏

Every time I hear someone tell a child 'Use your words', I inwardly cringe a little bit. If they could, they would. There are so many better ways to help children feel confident in their ability to express their wants and needs!

Today was a big moment for one of my clients. We’ve been working on ‘stop’ for over a month, which has been hard bc of the bilabial vs alveolar sounds. We started with ‘dop’ about 4 weeks ago. Today we added the ‘s’ sound and they got all the sounds in the right order 🎉

It’s easy to take speaking for granted. But when you see someone work so hard to communicate, you’re reminded what a privilege it is to be a part of a child’s journey as they improve their communication skills. It’s the best ❤️

This deck is so handy if you work with preschooler-2nd graders! I regularly use it when I’m working on themes (farm, community, school, etc), comparing/contrasting, and categorizing. The pics are so fun and inclusive, and I know I’m biased, but I love this deck. Grab it while it’s on sale!

I found a new way to talk about smooth vs bumpy speech using a marble run this week. It was a great analogy for a new child I just started seeing; he loved putting the marbles into the run that felt like it matched his speech. I love when I find new ways to use toys I already have 👏

I love backward chaining! It’s such a great tool to help kids create more complex motor plans without reinforcing negative practice. I also like adding visual and gestural cues during drills to help kids remember where their tongue should be.

Stopping is a common phonological process for young children. Using gestures and metaphors can be helpful ways for them to learn how to get a clear ‘ch’ with centralized airflow.

Is your toddler not talking as much as you expected? 👀

You've probably heard "just wait and see" — and I want to talk about why that advice doesn't sit right with me as an SLP.
Here's the truth: we can't reliably predict which late talkers will catch up on their own and which ones won't. And even the kids who do catch up often still show gaps in language, literacy, and memory skills years later.

Getting an evaluation isn't something to put off until you're "worried enough." It's how you get either peace of mind or an action plan — and both of those are a win.

I love an app that makes session prep (and homework practice) more simple. This articulation arcade minimal pairs app has 6 games, all the target words you’ll ever need, and a quick and easy process for tracking progress. I especially love that you can target entire phonological processes and not just individual sounds. Check it out!
