This is the actual call I received from my TMJ patient after our third session. He came in with severe pain and very high anxiety. We spent over 4 hours together across three visits.

Neuromuscular testing assesses how well your nervous system and muscles communicate to produce coordinated, efficient movement. It focuses on quality of movement—looking at timing, reaction time, stability under load, and how muscles activate in response to sensory feedback.

Typically, in PT school we learn about:
Muscular testing (manual muscle testing) isolates strength in a single muscle or group, measuring maximal force production against resistance, usually graded on a 0–5 scale.

For the jaw we need to assess muscle GROUPS:

Aspect Neuromuscular Testing Muscular Testing
Primary focus Motor control, coordination, and reaction Maximal strength and force output
What is measured:
Movement quality, timing of muscle firing, balance
Force production against resistance

I like to work in tandem with dentists before Botox is administered to a problematic area.
Why?
to see if a muscle in pain would benefit from Botox or if it may worsen the symptoms.
