Proud of my college. These guys have really done some exceptional work. Fascinating stuff and just a glimpse of what molecular biology will be capable of in the future.

For billions of years nature has carried on regardless of what is happening in the human world. On an exceptionally nice spring day in Austin, Texas, take advantage of the extra time you have right now to experience it. Just as we beg for work right now, we will be begging for a moment like this later!

Emergencies still happen... even when everything is shut down. Avoid the ER and all of the risk that comes with it and see us for any general surgical need.

Remember no one should venture out unless they have to, but if the necessity arises, we are here.

If there is any uncertainty, consider setting up a telemedicine visit with us first to determine if coming in is even necessary. We are authorized to administer certain treatments and make certain diagnoses over the phone when possible.

Some of the more common ailments we are seeing in the office right now include abscesses, hemorrhoids, re**al bleeding, appendicitis, cholecystitis, acute/new hernias, and breast masses. Operations are performed on a case by case basis and require hospital board approval. We will do everything in our power to make everyone else comfortable until definitive treatment can take place.

Other visits that do well with telemedicine include discussions about reflux, general abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, chronic hernias, and screening tests like colonoscopies.

I fix a lot of hernias! In 2019, it made up over 40% of my practice. One the hottest topics as of late in the hernia world has to do with surgical mesh placement.
Unfortunately, the recent commercials address only a small sample of cases and do nothing to explain the full breadth of the issue.
The reality is that surgical implants of all types were designed to help patients. Some of them have been more successful than others, and mesh in particular, has overall been very successful.
It is not right for everyone in every case. This is why hernia management is determined individually by your surgeon.
The FDA has provided a nice summary here for patients to educate themselves prior to evaluation in the office and help them navigate this complicated topic.

HERNIA REPAIR

A hernia is a breakdown in your abdominal wall that normally keeps your insides wear they belong.

The most common types of hernias are ones you were born with or those that have developed over time from “wear and tear” so to speak. Following close behind is an incisional hernia. These occur in areas where you have had a surgery before, and the abdominal wall has broken down.

Symptoms of a hernia include a bulge or lump under the skin, most commonly around the belly button, the groin, or near prior surgery sites. There may even be a squishy sensation or movement if anyone tries to push it back inside.

Hernias are sometimes accompanied by pain, but not always. A painful hernia can be an indication of an emergency.

Certain factors put patients at higher risk for herniation such as obesity and to***co use. Genetics also play a major role.

In most cases, hernia repair is recommended. Particularly if the hernia is restricting activity or getting larger. Give my office a call and I can take a look.

Most operations have a very quick recovery while the defect is still small. I perform the most advanced types of hernia repairs available today.

Depending on insurance, some may require a referral. Be sure to check with them ahead of time.
