I ran for class president in elementary school.
Spoiler alert: I lost.

Hard to beat a campaign promising Pizza Hut for lunch.

’s Top Doctors is one of few awards based entirely on peer voting.
Doctors nominate doctors.

Unfortunately not much time to campaign this year.
Just trying to survive early days of solo practice,
and not become Austin’s Top Doctor.

So to my peers who voted for me, thank you.

Someone dropped these off at my office today.
Middle of day, busy clinic.
No card. No name.

Being an entrepreneur can be lonely.
Instead of hanging out, you network.
Friends slowly replaced with colleagues.
Not bad, just a different life.
But sometimes you worry that your relationships are becoming so utilitarian, they’ll forget you without the next referral.

When I got home, my boys were ecstatic.
Whoever did this
allowed me to be both entrepreneur
and still hero for the day.

Pure, anonymous, unreciprocated kindness.
No transaction or expectations.

Such a refreshing reminder:
build the business,
but don’t forget to build each other.

One of the hardest habits to break as a small practice owner is undervaluing your time.

It’s hard to let go of the “do-it-yourself, roll up sleeves, bootstraps” mentality.

When an office printer breaks down,
it’s easy to set out on a furious hunt to replace.
Hours on ChatGPT, FB Marketplace, Google.
Researching best makes and models.
Countless dead-end messages with sellers.
Hoping to find the same model so you can salvage unused toner.

Then meeting a possibly sketchy seller
in a random parking lot,
in a random city,
hours from your office,
just to save a few hundred bucks.

To scale and grow,
you must learn to let go.
Trust your team, delegate.
Then use that time and energy to more effectively build your practice.

In reality, the more cost-effective approach would be to entrust this task to your office manager to simply order a replacement from Office Depot or Amazon.

But where’s the fun in that 😉

I was spoiled as the youngest child.
Sharing didn’t come naturally.

When I graduated medical school,
I was deep in debt.
When I got out of debt,
I was catching up.
When I became partner,
the house needed work.

There was always an excuse.

Starting a new practice has reset a lot.
Back in debt, excuses come easy again.
But I’m trying to be more intentional with what we have.
And stay grounded even when things feel tight.
Hopefully my kids can see that you don’t need abundance to be kind.

Thank you Jenna Malsbary and Austin Young Lawyers (AYLA) for creating a space to give.
Even in a small way, it meant a lot to be part of it.

One night while on call at Mass General, I was asked to help with a late ortho case.

When I walked into the OR, I saw one of the department chairs managing the case alone.

I asked why he was there overnight for a routine case.

He told me, “there’s always more to learn.”

Cadaver labs are usually for younger docs learning new techniques.

I recently attended one for a spinal procedure I’ve done countless times.

It gave me a chance to reflect with a few emerging fellows on the work we do.

A reminder to be kind to yourself as you navigate the corporate world.

We’re all learning as we go.

Medicine keeps changing.

Our patients keep changing.

And we owe it to them to keep growing.

Because while experience grounds us,

There’s always more to learn.

Christmas 🎄 is my favorite time of year. Many of my best memories, both from my childhood and now with my own kiddos, are tied to the holidays. Unfortunately, many children involved with Child Protective Services don’t get to experience those same joys.
