With heavy hearts, Murdoch Funeral Home announces that we said goodbye to our longtime colleague and friend, Stanley Lawrence, on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.

Stan was an institution in the Central City community and among fellow funeral service professionals; he dedicated his entire life to serving others and doing it well.

The pride Stan took in his profession was evident in his unmistakable license plate, which stood for "Central City Embalmer," and in the compassionate care he gave to the countless families he served throughout his sixty-year career at Murdoch Funeral Home.

Beyond funeral service, Stan was a son, a brother, a husband, a dad, a grandfather, a great-grandfather, an uncle, a veteran, a world traveler, an unmatched BINGO caller, and a dear friend.

We will miss the stories. We will miss the laughs. We will miss you, Stan.

With love,

Your Murdoch Family

Murdoch Funeral Homes was proud to be part of an important preservation project with the City of Marion at historic Oak Shade Cemetery. Through many, many months of work and coordination between several city offices and local businesses, we were able to ensure that the final resting places of the families in the Oak Shade crypt will continue to stand the test of time.

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor the brave men and women who served our country with courage and sacrifice. We remember those we have lost, honor all veterans today and remember their families.

May we never forget the freedoms made possible by their service.

Meet Dan Gomez: veteran, dog dad, and all-around great guy. Born and raised in McHenry, Illinois, Dan is planting roots in the Cedar Rapids metro area with his soon-to-be-wife, Dakota.

As our Monument Specialist, Dan works side-by-side with families to design meaningful, lasting memorials, markers, and headstones.

His creativity and attention to detail help ensure every permanent tribute is as unique as the life it represents. We’re excited to have him on the Murdoch team!

Get your local history fix by tuning into the Memories of Marion podcast, featuring the nearly 180-year story of Murdoch Funeral Home.

Hosted by Matt Kenney and Robby Marvin to capture and preserve stories and important events in Marion Iowa’s history before they are lost to time. They hope to help community members reconnect with one another and connect them to emotions of the past.

Several of our licensed funeral directors had the opportunity to attend the 146th Annual Iowa Funeral Directors Association Convention this week in Altoona, Iowa. We made excellent connections with our colleagues across the entire state, heard some captivating speakers, and came away inspired to serve even better than before.

Special thanks to the IFDA staff and leadership for making this an event to remember.
