The Grace C Mae Advocate Center is opening new volunteer positions on its Board of Directors. We are looking for enthusiastic people who want to make a real difference for people going through difficult times. We meet once a quarter, and additional meetings can be held for committees or special reasons. We are currently working on our new strategic plan, which will commence on January 30, 2027. We are looking for people with a background in financial investments, marketing/advertising, event planning, law enforcement or similar public service, family member of person with mental health diagnosis, business owner, construction/contractor, military active duty or veteran, and a person (survivor or family member) affected by cancer. We do have an application process that includes a background check, interviews, and a written application. The Board of Directors provides oversight, leadership, and guides the Executive Director in decision making. The agency provides Directors and Officers liability insurance coverage. The Advocate Center is a non-profit regional mental health clinic with offices located in Washington, Cedar Rapids, Marengo, Marshalltown, and southern central Missouri. Board members can be from anywhere in the U.S. Board members can attend by video conference or by phone. Meetings are held at the Cedar Rapids location. Apply by emailing me at [email protected].

**Current or former patients of Grace C Mae Advocate Center cannot be seated as voting members on the Board of Directors; however, former patients who were discharged at least 10 years ago can serve on special committees in an advisory capacity.**

We are so excited to announce our new therapist, Shelby Ridenour, is ready to accept new patients in our Washington office! She does not have a waiting list yet! Call to schedule today, 319-361-6529.

About Shelby

Shelby was born and raised in Southeast Iowa where she still resides with her chaotic crew of animals. When she’s not chasing them around trying to get them to drop whatever is in their mouth, she enjoys reading, cooking, and spoiling her nephew. Shelby has spent the last three years working for a local domestic violence and sexual assault program. Prior to that, she spent some time as a paraeducator for at-risk and ESL youth. Shelby utilizes a number of approaches, especially a person-centered and strengths-based approach with an emphasis on empowerment, as well as narrative therapy. She believes that every individual is the expert of their own story and guides her practice around that.

Education

MSW - University of Iowa

BA Psychology and English Creative Writing - Cornell College

License and Certifications

LMSW - Iowa

Certified Victim Advocate - Iowa

Shelby is accepting new clients at the Washington office, nearby school districts, and telehealth.
