Every week, I meet children who've been labeled as "slow learners"—but that's not the real issue.

As an optometrist with over 40 years of clinical experience, I've seen firsthand how undetected visual dysfunction can silently steal a child's confidence, attention, and love of learning.

When we identify and treat these conditions through vision therapy, the transformation is remarkable. Children begin to process information faster, read with less effort, and show up to school with energy rather than anxiety.

Vision is not just about seeing clearly. It's about how the eyes teach the brain to think.

If you work with struggling learners—or love one—this is worth knowing.

When parents would sit across from me in my clinic, I could see the exhaustion in their eyes. They'd been to teacher conferences. They'd hired tutors. They'd tried new apps, new curricula, new everything.

And still, their child was struggling.

What broke my heart most was that often, the answer wasn't more effort. It was a missing piece almost no one had thought to look for: vision.

I wrote Visual Secrets for School Success because I wanted every parent — not just the ones who happened to find their way into my practice — to have access to this information. To finally have language for what they were seeing in their child. To know what questions to ask, what evaluations to request, and what hope looks like on the other side.

If you have a child who works hard but still struggles, this book was written for you. 💜

In a world full of screens and quick texts, World Calligraphy Day invites us to slow down and rediscover the joy of the written word.

Handwriting isn't just functional—it's personal, expressive, and powerful. Calligraphy turns letters into artwork and stories into soul-soothing therapy. Across cultures, it's been a way to honor history, beauty, and individuality.

Whether you're doodling, journaling, or lettering a favorite quote, take a moment today to write with intention and heart. Your handwriting is a reflection of you, and that’s worth celebrating.

School's almost here.
Is your child's vision ready for it?

The countdown to the new school year has begun, and a strong start depends on more than new backpacks and sharpened pencils. It depends on how well your child's eyes are actually working.

Vision is about so much more than reading a 20/20 chart. Many learning struggles that show up in the classroom, such as trouble focusing, frequent headaches, and avoiding reading, can actually trace back to an undetected vision problem. That's why a comprehensive eye exam deserves a spot at the top of your back-to-school checklist, right alongside school supplies.

When vision is working the way it should, kids show up to class ready to succeed:
✅ Sharper focus during lessons
✅ Fewer headaches and less eye strain
✅ More confidence tackling reading and schoolwork

Clear vision doesn't just help kids see the board — it helps them focus better, learn faster, and feel more confident every single day.

👉 Before the first bell rings, schedule a comprehensive eye exam and give your child the clearest possible start to the school year.

This month we’re focusing on something many of us put off: our eye health.

Vision changes often come quietly, but early signs of problems like glaucoma, cataracts, or macular degeneration can be spotted before they cause lasting damage.

Experts recommend eye exams every year.
Don’t wait for blurry signs. Your eyes do so much for you—let’s return the favor with routine care.

This quote reminds us that reading isn’t just a school subject; it’s a life skill.
It fuels imagination, confidence, learning, and the ability to dream bigger. Children who read well often think bigger and reach higher.

But what if reading feels like a constant struggle? Blurry words, losing place, or skipping lines may be signs of a visual processing issue—not a lack of intelligence or effort.

Empower your child to thrive, not just survive. Let’s give your child the tools they need to thrive.

Every August, Children's Eye Health & Safety Month puts pediatric vision front and center, with a focus on preventing childhood blindness. But most parents assume a passed eye chart means "all clear"—when really, 20/20 eyesight is just one small piece of how a child actually sees and learns.

Protecting your child's eyes is just as important as understanding how they see. A few simple habits go a long way:

✅ Wear protective goggles during sports, yard work, or during science experiments
✅ Limit screen time and encourage the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds)
✅ Keep sharp objects and chemicals out of reach of young children
✅ Use sunglasses with UV protection outdoors
✅ Never let kids look directly at the sun, even during eclipses

Our eyes are one of life's greatest gifts, and protecting them isn't optional; it's essential. Simple safety habits today can prevent lifelong damage tomorrow, so let's make sure every child grows up with eyes that are not just safe but truly SEEing their full potential.

Reading gives children freedom. 🌟
Reading opens doors to knowledge, opportunity, and confidence. Strong reading skills help children succeed not only in school but also in everyday life.

The earlier children enjoy reading, the stronger their learning foundation becomes.

My book started with one question: why do so many smart kids struggle in school? When I started asking that question 40 years ago, the answer I kept finding was the same one nobody was talking about...

Vision.

Not just eyesight, but the full system of 40+ visual skills that allow a child to take in, process, and make meaning from everything they see.

Visual Secrets for School Success was born from thousands of hours with struggling students and heartbroken parents who came to me after years — sometimes decades — of searching for answers.

The 'secrets' aren't really secrets at all. It's clinical knowledge that has been locked inside optometry offices, and I wanted to put it directly into the hands of every parent and educator who needed it.

Because when you see more clearly, you can be and do more.

And I believe every child deserves that chance.

Vision therapy isn't just for kids. Adults and athletes benefit too — at any age. ✨

I work with struggling students every day. But optometric vision therapy also helps:

👩‍💼 Adults recovering from concussion or brain injury
🏃 Athletes who want to sharpen visual reaction time and depth perception
👴 Seniors managing vision changes that affect balance and fall risk
👨‍💻 Professionals with chronic screen fatigue, headaches, and eye strain

There may be a visual component that has never been properly assessed. You deserve to see clearly too.

Vision therapy is for anyone whose visual system isn't working at its best, at any age. Book an evaluation today.
