Excellent article highlighting the story a depressed medical student. I love that he's attempting to reduce stigma around mental health by sharing his own story.
Check out this statistic from the National Institute of Mental Health. [In 2016] an estimated 16.2 million adults in the United States had at least one major depressive episode. This number represented 6.7% of all U.S. adults.
Depression is often caused by a combination of biological, psychological, sociocultural, and environmental factors. Developing a depressive episode or struggling with any other mental health problem is not indicative of personal weakness of any kind. Stories like these continue to provide hope that eventually mental health problems will be viewed with the same respect as physical health problems. Most people experience them, but not all discuss them openly without shame or guilt. Let's continue having these conversations and work toward changing societal views.
