📚 Book Review: It Didn't Start With You by Mark Wolynn

One of the most powerful reminders this book offers is that our struggles don't always begin with us.

It Didn't Start With You explores how unresolved trauma can be passed down through generations—shaping the way we think, feel, and relate to others, often without us realizing it. Whether or not every theory in the book is supported by the research, it raises an important question: What experiences have influenced the story you're living today?

This perspective aligns with what we often explore in EMDR therapy—understanding the origins of present-day symptoms so they no longer have to define the future.

If you're an EMDR therapist, consultant, or simply passionate about trauma-informed care, this book is a thought-provoking addition to your reading list.

Have you read it? We'd love to hear your biggest takeaway. đź’™

Trauma isn't defined solely by what happened—it's also shaped by what had to be carried alone.

As Peter Levine reminds us:

"Trauma is not what happens to us, but what we hold inside in the absence of an empathetic witness."

One of the most powerful aspects of EMDR therapy is the therapeutic relationship itself. Healing doesn't happen because a clinician has all the answers—it happens when clients no longer have to hold overwhelming experiences in isolation.

As EMDR therapists, we have the privilege and responsibility of becoming that empathetic witness: creating safety, attunement, and connection while guiding clients through the reprocessing of painful experiences.

Because healing isn't just about revisiting the past—it's about no longer carrying it alone.

There’s often a gap between understanding trauma and knowing how to effectively intervene when clients become stuck, overwhelmed, dissociative, or unable to move into meaningful processing.

The Bridge Course: At the Crossroads of Trauma Therapy (Level 1.5) was created to help bridge that gap.

Join Rachel Walker, MA, LMFT, and Eleni Sefton, MS, LCSW, for an EMDRIA-approved training designed for clinicians who want to deepen their trauma work with greater confidence, clarity, and clinical precision.

Many people are surprised to learn this.

One of the biggest misconceptions about EMDR is that it's hypnosis. It isn't.

During EMDR therapy, clients remain fully awake, aware, and in control throughout the entire process. You can pause at any time, ask questions, and communicate with your therapist throughout the session.

EMDR isn't about losing control—it's about helping your brain process experiences that have become "stuck" so they no longer carry the same emotional intensity.

Understanding what EMDR isn't can make it feel a little less intimidating—and a lot more accessible.

Healing isn't about erasing what happened.

It's about discovering that your story is bigger than your pain.

This quote reminds us that growth and transformation often emerge from the places we've struggled most. Trauma can leave wounds, but it can also reveal resilience, strength, and the capacity to move forward in new ways.

EMDR therapy helps the brain process difficult experiences so they no longer feel stuck in the present. Healing doesn't change the past—it changes your relationship with it.

âś… TRUE

While EMDR is best known for treating trauma and PTSD, it can also be highly effective for anxiety.

Many experiences that contribute to anxiety aren't what people traditionally think of as "trauma." Repeated criticism, bullying, difficult relationships, medical experiences, perfectionism, performance pressure, or feeling unsafe growing up can all shape the way our nervous system responds to stress.

EMDR helps identify and reprocess the experiences that may be fueling anxious thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations today. Rather than simply managing symptoms, EMDR works to address the underlying experiences that may be keeping anxiety stuck in place.

If you've ever thought, "Nothing bad enough happened to me to need therapy," but still struggle with anxiety, EMDR may be worth exploring.

As EMDR therapists, we're trained to pay attention to our clients' responses—but it's equally important to notice our own.

Do you feel a strong urge to reassure? Explain? Fix? Rescue?

These moments can offer valuable clinical information about what may be happening in the therapeutic relationship and what attachment needs are being activated in the room.

Rather than immediately acting on the impulse, consider getting curious about it.

Your reaction may be pointing toward something important.

You don’t have to control every thought that enters your mind.

Many of us spend so much energy fighting anxiety, self-doubt, or difficult emotions that we forget an important truth: thoughts are not commands. They are experiences.

Healing often begins when we stop trying to eliminate every uncomfortable thought and instead learn to notice them with curiosity, compassion, and perspective.

The goal isn’t perfect control.
The goal is greater freedom.

What thought are you learning to hold more lightly these days?
