👏 Congratulations to Dr. Matt Glowiak, Professor and Training Director at the Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School, on his recent presentation for the North Central Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (NCACES).

Dr. Glowiak joined fellow counseling leaders to present:
“Legislative Advocacy for Counselor Educators and Supervisors”

During this important webinar, participants explored the vital role counselor educators play in shaping legislation that impacts the counseling profession. Topics included:
✅ Why legislative advocacy matters for counselor educators and supervisors
✅ How advocacy advances the counseling profession
✅ Opportunities to engage at the local, state, and federal levels
✅ Resources for tracking and understanding counseling-related legislation
✅ Practical strategies for becoming an effective advocate

As a profession grounded in leadership, service, and advocacy, counselor educators have an important voice in shaping policies that support counselors, clients, and communities. We are proud to see Dr. Glowiak contributing his expertise to this regional conversation and helping prepare counselors to make an impact beyond the classroom.

NCACES represents counselor educators and supervisors across 13 Midwestern states and serves as a regional association of the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES).

📚 Faculty Scholarship Spotlight

Congratulations to Dr. Edith Gonzalez, Associate Professor at the Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School, on her co-authorship of the newly published article: “School Counselors’ Contact Level, Competence, and Advocacy for Undocumented Students”

Published in Professional School Counseling, this national study examined school counselors' preparedness to serve and advocate for undocumented students across K–12 settings.

The research found that:
✅ School counselors with higher perceived competence and direct contact with undocumented students were significantly more likely to engage in advocacy efforts.
✅ Nearly half of surveyed school counselors reported receiving no training related to supporting undocumented students.
✅ Access to professional development and training is critical to helping counselors provide culturally responsive mental health, academic, and postsecondary support.

This important work highlights the role of counselor education in preparing professionals to advocate for underserved and historically marginalized populations—a commitment reflected in the Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School's mission to prepare future leaders in behavioral health and counseling.

Congratulations to Dr. Gonzalez and her co-authors on advancing the counseling profession through impactful scholarship.

Honoring a Legacy of Compassion
Students and faculty gathered at Center City to honor Cheryl Schwaiger McKinley for her extraordinary generosity and lifelong commitment to our mission.

Her planned gift of $3.8 million will support the Annual Fund, the Graduate School, and programming on spirituality and addiction—advancing compassionate, whole-person care for future generations.

As Dr. Kevin Doyle shared, “Cheryl brings care and purpose to the way she lives and gives—deeply aligned with how we prepare future counselors.”
