🛡️ Mineral of the Week: Zinc
Zinc may be needed only in small amounts, but it plays a big role throughout the body—especially in supporting a healthy immune system!
Zinc helps immune cells develop, communicate, and respond when the body encounters germs. It also supports the protective barriers in the skin and tissues that act as one of the body’s first lines of defense. When zinc levels are too low, the immune system may not function as effectively.
Beyond immunity, zinc helps the body make proteins and DNA, supports wound healing, contributes to healthy growth and development, and plays a role in our ability to taste and smell.
Great food sources of zinc include:
🥩 Beef, poultry, and pork
🦪 Oysters and other seafood
🥛 Milk, cheese, and yogurt
🥚 Eggs
🫘 Beans, chickpeas, and lentils
🥜 Nuts and seeds
🥣 Fortified cereals and whole grains
