William Robert Burns, 25, was killed during the D-Day invasion on June 8, 1944.

A native of Evergreen, NC, Burns was born April 9, 1919, in Great Falls, Montana.

On April 14, 1942, Burns enlisted in the Navy in Raleigh, NC. On June 8, 1944, Mr. Burns was assigned to the destroyer USS Glennon, which struck a mine off the coast of Quinnéville, France, forcing 16 sailors overboard.

Mr. Burns was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with a bronze campaign star, and the World War II Victory Medal.

Almost 81 years following his death, Mr. Burn’s funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2026 at Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery, with full military honors, under the direction of Worthington Funeral Home.

Surviving family includes Mr. Burns’ nephews and nieces, Harold Covington, Sylvia Scott, Faye Myers, and Carol Ellington; 11 great nieces and nephews; 22 great-great nieces and nephews; 16 great-great-great nieces and nephews.

It is an honor, to once again, be chosen as the “Best Funeral Home in Columbus County.”

It has been brought to my attention that many of the families we are serving are getting a SPAM call from a gentleman pretending to work for the funeral home….. he goes by the name of “Craig”. He is making comments such as liability insurance and requiring payment up front!

AGAIN…. There is no one employed by the funeral home with the name of Craig and this is a spam caller!
