🫶🏼Supporting regulation from caregiver to child

Luckily, most of our families at Lafrance Pediatrics & Pelvic Health understand the assignment. 🤍 They’ve seen firsthand that the “play” is where the real work happens.

But we still hear this quite a bit in the community, and it’s one of the biggest misconceptions about pediatric therapy as a whole.

What you see:
🟡 A party blower
🟡 Pom-poms
🟡 Blocks
🟡 A “Pom-pom race”

What we see:
✨ Diaphragmatic breathing
✨ Improved breathing mechanics
✨ Pressure management
✨ Prolonged exhalation
✨ Nervous system regulation
✨ Core and postural activation
✨ Oral motor coordination
✨ Attention, body awareness, and motor planning

Sometimes the most effective therapy doesn’t look like therapy at all. 💙

Potty training can be HUMBLING, to say the least. 😅 (Even for me, the nerd for all things p**p!)

We’re often so quick to put pressure on kids when a birthday is approaching or preschool is around the corner. But kids feel pressure—and it’s both a blessing and a curse that their bodies and minds feel small shifts so strongly.

When a kid starts running in the opposite direction, it’s often not defiance. It’s communication.

💩Maybe they don’t know what their body is telling them yet.
💩Maybe they’re struggling with constipation (which deserves its own post).
💩Maybe the sounds and smells of the bathroom feel overwhelming
💩Maybe they need more support with body awareness, regulation, communication, or interoception.
💩Maybe they want to fully understand what should be expected before they can relax

Sometimes the best thing we can do is take the pressure off everyone (and that means EVERYONE in the house) and get curious about what their body is trying to tell us.

💛 Comment CHECKLIST and I’ll send you my Intro To Potty Learning Checklist.

If you’re feeling stuck and need more support, a discovery call or evaluation may help uncover what’s getting in the way and create a plan that works for your child.

“Things I’m doing to support my 1 year old cook their own dinner” 🤪 sound familiar?

It’s exaggerated of course but it’s exactly what’s in a lot of new parents’ algorithms. Unrealistic, developmentally inappropriate expectations.

Milestones are there for a reason—BUT the timeline isn’t the whole story 🤍

Before new skills emerge, there are often dozens of smaller building blocks happening underneath: movement experiences, strength, postural control, coordination, body awareness, and opportunities to practice.

Development isn’t usually a checklist and definitely isn’t black and white—it’s more like layers building on each other over time. As OTs, we aren’t focusing on the age or timeline of a milestone in itself. The building blocks of movement and body awareness matter to us so much more.

Support the foundation and the skills often follow.

We talk so much about strengthening after pregnancy—but not enough about restoring movement 🤍

Your rib cage and breathing mechanics influence more than people realize: pressure management, pelvic floor coordination, core function, posture, lifting, exercise, and even comfort during everyday movement.

Sometimes postpartum recovery isn’t about doing more—it’s about giving the body options again.

Small movement. Big impact.

Toddler moms don’t need another exercise program—they need movement strategies they can actually use.

Hip hinging won’t solve everything, but understanding how to use your hips/glutes to share the load can make everyday lifting feel easier on your low back, core, and pelvic floor.

💕Motherhood can be repetitive. There’s a way to use it to your advantage. Small changes repeated often make the most impact.

🧠 The more rushed and overstimulated life feels, the more our kids feel it too (which deserves a whole post in itself).

That’s nothing against busy parents because TRUST I’m right there with you and unfortunately that’s just the world we live in nowadays.

👆But in all the busyness, we need to actively remind ourselves that attention, learning, and new skills happen best when the body has space to move and the nervous system feels ready.

💪🏼 Allowing our kids to have opportunities for movement isn’t lowering expectations—it’s creating the conditions for learning.

Stay tuned! More questions + real-life answers coming soon 🫶🏼

☝🏼And that goes for all of us!

Imagine you’re overwhelmed and stressed at work and someone hands you their phone saying, “Here, let me show you how to use this app really quick.” 😅🤯

Learning is hard when the nervous system doesn’t feel regulated first.
