Regression is not going backwards. It is the nervous system reallocating resources under load, protecting survival first and skills second.
James has taught me so much about this. For years, I've watched skills come and go, not linearly, but in response to how much his nervous system was carrying, and understanding that has stopped me from ever seeing it as loss.
Skills need capacity, talking, toileting, eating, dressing, and coping all draw on the same limited resources as regulation. Capacity is not constant, illness, stress, sensory overload, change, or exhaustion can all reduce what's available. When capacity drops, skills go first, the brain protects survival functions and drops the ones that take the most effort. This is protective, not defective, losing access to a skill temporarily is the nervous system managing overload, not a permanent decline.
Regression is not the loss of a skill. It's the temporary loss of access to it.

Regression usually follows a build-up, not a single event, illness or pain, sensory overload, unmet needs building up, change or transition, masking fatigue, and grief, fear, or big emotion, all stacking like stones until capacity gives way.
When the load becomes too much, the nervous system shifts from growth mode to survival mode, mild load brings slower processing and occasional slips, moderate load brings inconsistency and more support needed, high load brings a noticeable loss of previously independent skills, and survival mode brings full regression, needing significant support just to get through the day. This is not a choice. It is a biological response to demand outweighing capacity.
Regression looks different per person, same overload, different nervous system, different skills affected. It's not about age. It's about available capacity in the moment.
What the nervous system needs, the goal is not to force the skill back. The goal is to rebuild capacity. Safety, reduce demands and pressure first, regulation, support the nervous system before expecting the skill to return, connection, co-regulate rather than correct, understanding, meet the current need, not the previous baseline, and time, recovery is not instant, and pushing too soon can extend it.

It is reassuring to understand that regression is not a permanent decline, a loss of ability, or a sign that your child is giving up. Instead, it is a protective biological response. When stress, illness, sensory overload, or life changes overwhelm their nervous system, their brain temporarily shifts resources away from complex skills to safeguard core survival functions.
​Supporting your child through regression starts with shifting focus away from trying to force the skill back and toward restoring their overall capacity. Reduce daily demands, lower environmental stress, and prioritize co-regulation and emotional safety. When their nervous system feels secure and their internal battery is recharged, access to those temporarily hidden skills can naturally return. Meeting your child where they are today—rather than expecting yesterday's baseline—is the most powerful way to support their recovery.
