The Largest Organ of The Body: Skin

The skin is unique because it can simultaneously absorb, secrete, and excrete substances:

-Absorption

The skin can take in substances from the outside, such as:

Medications (like ni****ne or hormone patches)
Nutrients or chemicals in creams or ointments

This is why it’s sometimes called a semi-permeable organ.

-Secretion

The skin can secrete useful substances, primarily through sweat glands:

Sweat contains water, salts, and some metabolic waste

Sebaceous glands secrete sebum, which lubricates and protects the skin

-Excretion

Through sweat, the skin also removes waste products, such as: Urea, Ammonia, Excess salts

So, in short: the skin is the only organ that can absorb, secrete, and excrete, making it a vital organ for exchange with the environment.

An organ is a structure made of multiple tissue types working together to perform vital functions.

The skin meets this definition because it contains:
*Epithelial tissue (epidermis)
*Connective tissue (dermis, extracellular matrix)
