Negative focus is a thinking pattern in which your attention becomes disproportionately focused on what went wrong, what is missing, or what you believe you should have done better. It's not that the negative experience didn't matter. It's that it may be taking up so much mental space that you're overlooking the rest of the picture.

โ Remembering one critical comment while dismissing ten genuine compliments.
โ Focusing on a mistake instead of recognizing everything you did well.
โ Replaying an uncomfortable interaction while overlooking the many positive interactions you had.
โ Seeing what you haven't accomplished instead of acknowledging the progress you've made.
โ Fixating on a relationship's problems while struggling to recognize its healthy or meaningful moments.
โ Ending the day feeling unsuccessful because it wasn't as productive as you expected.

Past criticism, rejection, perfectionism, anxiety, low self-worth, or experiences in which mistakes had significant consequences may contribute to this pattern.
Perhaps you learned that noticing problems helped you avoid criticism.
Perhaps you became accustomed to looking for what needed fixing.
Perhaps you believe that acknowledging your successes means you're becoming complacent or that you must focus on your shortcomings to improve.

What went well today? Identify three things, even if they're small.
โ
What am I overlooking? Am I paying attention to one negative detail while ignoring the broader experience?
โ
What would I say to someone I love? Would I judge them as harshly for the same mistake?
โ
Can both things be true? Something may have gone wrong, and other things may still have gone right.
โ
What progress can I acknowledge? Even an imperfect effort can represent growth, courage, or persistence.
