I teach flexibility and mobility classes for Firstgevity, a Phoenix company that serves first responders and their families. Classes are designed to help prevent injuries and reduce stress.

It's rewarding work, bringing my kind of support to those who are constantly protecting our communities. πŸ™πŸ»

I teach once or twice a month to each of three local police departments, and today I got to spend time with a large class of new hires.

Twenty "kids" showed up dressed in blue shorts and white t-shirts, and I felt like I was teaching to my son's ROTC detachment. They were so respectful, polite, and good listeners. The future is bright with these young adults as our next generation of law enforcement professionals.

Thank you to all the men and women who choose this career and commit to serving their community.

Through Vitality in Motion, I get to teach chair yoga in several active adult communities and assisted living centers near my home, even though this employer is based in St. Louis.

I also occasionally teach virtually for the St. Louis Public Library. I can't see anyone while I'm teaching these classes, so I'm never sure how it's going in real time. But their feedback is always so positive and appreciative.

It's remarkably rewarding to support aging adults. It's not just about increasing lifespan anymore. The focus on functional fitness, mental health, and emotional health can help improve "healthspan."

Being able to move around, having a positive attitude, and feeling like you belong are like gold in our golden years. Yoga is perfect for this. πŸ’›

Never stop learning!

I recently spent an evening at a corporate yoga training with . I earned my YTT 300 certification through this program years ago, and I often return for continuing education credit requirements as well as to teach for their YTT 200 program.

led this training, which was so fun because we graduated together as RYT 500s! It was wonderful to reconnect with her and absorb her good ideas that I can take into my corporate yoga classes.

I also went to a workshop about fine minerals at a local museum. My daughter is a geological engineer, so I thought I should know something about rocks and gems and minerals. I learned a lot since I practically knew nothing about this going in, but I don't think she's out there in the field gathering astheticly pleasing and valuable gemstones. Darn. haha

It's fun and good for us to expand our horizons. Maybe challenge yourself to sign up for a class, lecture, or workshop. Don't be afraid to be a little nerdy. πŸ€“

I'm still thinking about our sound meditation from last weekend with deep appreciation and gratitude. Events like these are such meaningful ways to get together with your friends.

Kris and I offer these in-person events once a season, so please stay tuned for our Fall event.

In the meantime, if you're interested in bringing yoga and/or sound to your circle of friends, we'd love to set something up for you.

I enjoy sharing the benefits of yoga through private, in-person events, and have been to backyards, pools, and living rooms across Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, and Phoenix.

What's fun to see is how much hosts enjoy sharing their beautiful spaces with their friends, especially for something so peaceful. And even the host is able to relax!

So as we anticipate the return of cooler temps soon (hopefully), please message me to set something special on your calendar. You provide the space and invite your friends, and we take care of the rest. πŸ₯°

I teach for Yoga's Arc - a mobile yoga studio that provides yoga in some of the most unlikely places. They offer yoga classes in restaurants, schools, shelters, breweries, prisons, behavioral health centers, parks, hospitals, universities, farmers markets, stores, housing communities, and more.

This Sunday, August 9th, I'm teaching a slow flow and relaxation yoga class inside the tasting room at Aridus Winery in Scottsdale, right in the heart of the Old Town Arts District.

Your ticket to this 11 a.m. class includes a glass of wine of your choice afterwards. Gather friends or a loved one and treat yourselves to a luxurious yoga class, wine, and maybe lunch and shopping in Scottsdale.

Tickets are $35 and can be purchased using the link below. A portion of the proceeds helps to support bringing yoga to communities who would normally be unable to afford yoga.

In our yoga classes this week, our Kosha Series continues.

We go another layer deeper into our Manomaya Kosha (our mental body). This layer involves the functions of our mind that relate to everyday living and our individual interpretation of life. We become aware of our mental commentary and do our best to release it.

As you may be familiar, our mental body can be both a benefit and a saboteur, depending on how we train our mind. Fortunately for us, the practice of yoga is designed to bring out the higher functions of our mind so we may move into our inner, more subtle sheaths without hindrance.

The mental later is the bridge between the outer layers and the deepest parts of ourselves. We're getting there!

Join us for this exploration at LA Fitness or our at-home yoga practices via Zoom.

🌿 Yoga Enthusiast of the Month 🌿

The absolute best part of my job is connecting with others. I've been introduced to so many remarkable human beings through teaching yoga, and they inspire me to be a better teacher and a better person. Each month, I share with you someone I'm grateful to have met.

Cindy is an accomplished athlete, competing in team sports like softball and soccer, running 5Ks, and even doing triathlons! She never thought yoga was for her and avoided taking a class for many reasons, one of which is that she didn't believe she was flexible enough. However, a friend suggested yoga would be beneficial, and Cindy soon understood her friend was right. Thank you, Cindy's friend! :)

Since she started practicing, Cindy's gained significant strength and flexibility and feels challenged in every class. She's learned the value of slowing down and truly appreciates the spiritual and emotional aspects of the practice. Yoga has become an essential part of her life and fitness routine, almost as essential as her cute rescue dogs Freckles and Dutch.

Cindy is a bright light in every class, and I often find myself turning to her for advice on high-maintenance pet issues. (Nice to know we're in that together.) I'm so glad she took a chance on yoga and is now part of both our LA Fitness and Batch of Sky Yoga communities!

We'll expand a bit more on this energetic layer of ourselves this week by considering that we are all on a "Hero's Journey." Perhaps you're already familiar with Joseph Campbell -- the scholar, literature professor, and famous author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces.

In this work, Campbell outlines a universal motif of adventure and transformation that runs through virtually all of the world's mythic traditions by combining them with the insights of modern psychology. From Homer's The Odyssey to George Lucas's Star Wars to every story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we humans eat these stories up!

The plot: The main character starts from a place of innocence (not yet knowing he or she has special talents to offer or maybe even denying their skills or gifts), then the status quo is disrupted in some way and they realize they need to step out of their comfort zone. So they either head out alone, convince a pal to go with them, or pick up friends along the way. There are struggles to be faced, obstacles to overcome. They meet guides and mentors (Yoda, Dumbledore, Mr. Miyagi, Gandolf) who inspire, teach, and send them on with confidence as they heed the call of something liminal, sublime, something bigger than themselves. Sound familiar? It's like every blockbuster ever made.

What's that have to do with yoga? Well Joseph Campbell explains how the chakra system in the yoga tradition (those spinning wheels of energy within us, specifically the 7 chakras from the root of our spine to the crown of our head) mirrors the hero's journey. In a way, we are all as special as Katniss and Neo.

At our roots, we begin life full of potential for anything. Then our lived experiences take us in certain directions, towards different interests, groups of friends, and we begin to understand who we are. Then we realize...I was wrong, there's more than this. We understand we need to make a shift. Then our teachers and mentors show up, our friends support us, and maybe even our faith helps to guide us through our journey to our purpose, our journey to who we truly are.

Classes are going to be a fun ride this week. See you at LA Fitness or on Zoom.

🌿 Exciting News! 🌿

This serene space at Veterans Oasis Park will be the setting for weekly sunset yoga practices starting in January 2027. 😍

I like to plan ahead, but city governments understandably take planning ahead to another level.

So watch for your winter edition of Chandler Parks and Rec's Break Time magazine to arrive this fall for details and how to sign up.

In class, we've started an exploration of the koshas -- the 5 layers of self. They're sheaths, veils, or like the layers of an onion, and they can be revealed through the process of inquiry through asana, meditation, and breathwork.

The first layer is Annamaya, which literally meals "made of food." This is our physical body: our skin, organs, tissues, bones, etc. This part of ourselves could also include the unconscious habits of how we use and move our bodies such as going to sleep early/late, clenching our jaw/fists/whatever, stress/emotional eating, mindless scrolling...you get the idea.

It's important to take good care of this foundational body through nutrition, movement, and rest, and as we move through our lives it's helpful to notice that the ways in which we approach these three pillars of physical health may need to change.

Being mindful and aware of what movements benefits us rather than harm us, what foods make us feel good and which ones make us feel not so good, and noticing what habits set us up best for a good night's sleep can make a big difference in how well we take care of ourselves.

We'll keep this conversation going with each other and ourselves this week before we move on to the other layers. Join me for public classes at LA Fitness or through Zoom by visiting the link below to sign up for at-home yoga classes.
