Pediatric Foot and Ankle

Pediatric Foot and Ankle Dr. Mikkel Jarman is a Pediatric Podiatrist that specializes in the treatment of Sever’s disease in children.

Pediatric Foot & Ankle is a pediatric podiatry clinic (children's foot doctor) that specializes in children's foot conditions like Toe walking, pediatric flat feet, Sever's disease, and all other causes of foot and heel pain in children. Dr. Jarman received his doctorate degree in Podiatric Medicine and is a resident of the American College of Foot & Ankle Surgeons. Dr. Jarman is also a member of

the American Podiatric Association, certified by the American Board of Foot & Ankle Surgery, was awarded the Master HyProCure surgeon in June 2020, and is twice published on Podiatry Today. Pediatric podiatrists are a specialized subset of physicians that care for children's feet and ankles. The specialization is important because many pediatric foot conditions go undiagnosed or untreated until adulthood, when they become more complex to treat. Dr Jarman has been providing excellent children’s foot care & treatment services since 2002 and is committed to the health of your child’s feet now as well as in the future. Many parents are told that idiopathic toe walking in children is "just a phase" or "behavioral." However, severe toe walking is often structural—meaning no amount of physical therapy or waiting will fix it on its own.

In this video, Dr. Jarman discusses Evelyn’s story: going from persistent toe walking to standing flat at 90 degrees after a precise surgical correction. Correcting tight heel cords and foot structure restores natural mobility and prevents long-term joint damage.

If your child is toe walking or complaining of foot pain, early evaluation by a pediatric foot specialist makes all the difference.

Backpacks are packed, and the "Mom, my foot hurts!" season has officially begun 🎒

Here are the 4 foot injuries we see most in kids once school starts 👇

🤕 Ankle sprains: recess + fall sports tryouts are the #1 culprits
😣 Heel pain (Sever's disease): super common when sports ramp up during growth spurts
😬 Ingrown toenails: feet grow all summer, so check those shoe sizes!
🩹 Stubbed & broken toes: playground tumbles happen

Most of these are easy to prevent (and easy to treat when caught early). If your kiddo is limping, swollen, or sitting out of recess - don't wait it out. Little feet heal best with a little help. 💛

Do flat feet actually hurt? 👣

Short answer: sometimes, and it's easy to miss.
Flat feet are super common in kids, but if your child is complaining of foot, ankle, or leg pain, avoiding activity, or seems clumsier than their friends, it might not be "just growing pains." Dr. Jarman breaks down what's normal, what's not, and when it's time to get it checked.

The earlier it's caught, the easier it is to manage. 💙

New cleats, new season, new blisters?? 👀⚽️🏈
Back to school means back to practice, and those little feet are about to log some serious mileage.

Fun fact: kids' feet can grow up to two sizes in a single sports season, so that "perfect fit" shoe from August might be a toe-cruncher by October! 🦶

Flat feet vs. Sever's disease — the 2 biggest causes of foot pain in kids 👣
One is an arch problem. One is a growth plate problem. Both are fixable. Dr. Jarman breaks it down ⬇️
Heel pain isn't something kids should "just push through." If your child is hurting, we can help.

Back-to-school shopping means new shoes are probably on the list 👟 Before you check out, give them the 3-second test:

1️⃣ Thumb test: about a thumb's width between their longest toe and the front of the shoe

2️⃣ Twist test: it should only bend at the toe box, not wring out like a sponge

3️⃣ Heel hug:queeze the heel counter; it should be stiff, not floppy

Ill-fitting shoes can lead to blisters, pain, and even affect how your child walks and runs. Save this post for your next shopping trip, and swipe through for the full breakdown 👣
