🧅🥲 Why Do Onions Make Your Eyes Water?

Why do onions make your eyes water? The answer is chemistry—and a fast protective reflex.

Cutting an onion breaks open its cells and starts an enzymatic reaction that produces a volatile irritant called syn-propanethial-S-oxide. When that compound reaches the eye’s surface, it activates sensory nerves and stimulates the lacrimal glands to produce reflex tears.

Those tears help dilute and wash the irritant away. The temporary stinging usually improves once you move away from the fumes and fresh air clears the compound.

To reduce tearing, use a sharp knife, chill the onion before cutting, and improve ventilation around your workspace. Avoid rubbing your eyes, especially after handling onions, because residue on your fingers can make the irritation worse during food preparation.

👁️ The tears caused by onion fumes are usually temporary and protective. Move into fresh air, avoid rubbing your eyes, and rinse with clean water if irritation continues.

If pain, redness, or blurred vision persists—or you may have scratched your eye while cooking—call for guidance.

🚨 Chemical in Your Eye? Rinse First—Every Second Matters

A chemical splash to the eye requires immediate action.

Begin flushing the eye right away with plenty of room-temperature water. Continue rinsing for at least 15–20 minutes, blink frequently, and remove contact lenses if they come out easily. Do not rub the eye or attempt to neutralize the chemical with another substance.

After rinsing, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for guidance and seek urgent medical evaluation as directed—even if discomfort begins to improve.

Severe pain, significant vision changes, difficulty opening the eye, or exposure to a strong acid or alkali requires emergency-department evaluation immediately after irrigation.

If it can be done safely, bring the product container or Safety Data Sheet so the medical team can identify the chemical involved.

👁️ After completing immediate irrigation, call before arriving so the exposure and symptoms can be properly triaged.

👓 Are You Cleaning Your Glasses the Right Way?

Clean glasses begin with the right technique.

Start by rinsing your glasses under lukewarm water to remove loose dust and debris that could scratch the lenses. Apply a coating-safe cleaner approved for eyeglasses, then gently clean both sides of the lenses and the frame with a clean microfiber cloth.

Inspect the lenses for remaining streaks or smudges and finish with a clean, dry microfiber cloth if needed.

Avoid tissues, paper towels, clothing, household cleaners, harsh chemicals, and excessive heat. Never leave your glasses inside a hot vehicle—an especially important reminder during an East Valley summer.

Proper cleaning can improve clarity, reduce smudges, and help protect your lenses and their coatings from avoidable damage.

👁️ Clear, comfortable vision depends on more than a prescription. Lens materials, coatings, frame fit, cleaning habits, and everyday wear all matter.

Dr. Andrew N. Lu and the optical team at My Eye Consultants help patients throughout Chandler and the East Valley select, fit, adjust, and care for their eyewear.

👓 When Does Your Child Need More Than a Vision Screening?

Vision screenings are valuable. They can identify children who may need a closer look—but they are not designed to diagnose every eye or vision condition.

If your child does not pass a screening, cannot complete the test reliably, has symptoms, or has relevant medical or family risk factors, a comprehensive eye examination may be the appropriate next step.

An eye doctor can evaluate how clearly each eye sees, eye alignment and movement, focusing ability, refractive errors such as nearsightedness or astigmatism, and the health of the eyes.

Children do not always realize that one eye sees differently from the other. Watch for squinting, closing one eye, an eye turn, frequent headaches, holding material unusually close, or avoiding visually demanding activities.

A screening can open the door. A comprehensive examination can help explain what the screening found.

👁️ If a school or pediatric screening raises a concern, bring the results with you. They can provide a helpful starting point for your child’s examination.

💧 How Your Eyes Make—and Drain—Tears

Tears do much more than appear when we cry.

The lacrimal gland produces much of the watery component of the tear film. Each blink spreads that tear film across the eye, helping keep the surface smooth, comfortable, and protected from dust and other irritants.

Tears then collect near the inner corner of the eyelids and enter two tiny openings called the lacrimal puncta. From there, they travel through the canaliculi into the lacrimal sac, down the nasolacrimal duct, and finally into the nose.

That connection explains why your nose may run when you cry.

Problems with tear production, tear-film quality, blinking, or drainage can contribute to dryness, irritation, or excessive watering. A comprehensive eye examination helps identify which part of the system may not be functioning normally.

👁️ Watery eyes do not always mean that your eyes are producing too many tears. Dryness, irritation, eyelid position, and problems within the tear-drainage system can all contribute.

Dr. Luis W. Lu and Dr. Andrew N. Lu provide thorough evaluations for dry, irritated, or persistently watery eyes for patients throughout Chandler and the East Valley.

👁️ Why Do Eye Doctors Dilate Your Pupils? 📖

What happens when your eyes are dilated?

Special eye drops temporarily widen your pupils, giving your doctor a clearer view of the retina, optic nerve, and other structures inside the eye.

This expanded view can reveal signs of diabetic eye disease, age-related macular degeneration, retinal tears, and optic-nerve changes associated with glaucoma—sometimes before you notice symptoms.

Afterward, your eyes may be sensitive to light and your near vision may remain blurry for several hours. Bring sunglasses, and consider arranging a ride if you are unsure whether you will feel comfortable driving.

Dilation is only one part of a comprehensive eye examination, but it provides information that cannot always be obtained from a vision test alone.

A thorough look inside today can help protect the vision your family depends on tomorrow.

👁️ A glasses prescription tells only part of the story. A comprehensive examination helps your doctor evaluate how clearly you see and the health of the structures inside your eyes.

👁 One Eyelid Suddenly Drooping? Know When It’s Urgent

Unilateral ptosis means one upper eyelid sits lower than the other.

It can develop gradually as the eyelid’s lifting tendon stretches with age. Other possible causes include trauma, swelling, Horner syndrome, third-nerve palsy, or a neuromuscular condition such as myasthenia gravis.

The timing and accompanying symptoms matter. Seek urgent medical evaluation for a new or suddenly drooping eyelid—especially with double vision, unequal pupils, eye or head pain, weakness, numbness, difficulty speaking, or trouble walking.

A droop that changes throughout the day or worsens with fatigue also deserves evaluation.

Even mild, persistent ptosis should be examined. In children, an eyelid that obstructs vision may interfere with normal visual development. An examination helps distinguish an eyelid problem from an underlying neurologic or muscular condition.

👁️ A drooping eyelid may be an eyelid problem, but it can occasionally be the first visible sign of something affecting the nerves or muscles.

Dr. Andrew N. Lu and his father, ophthalmologist Dr. Luis W. Lu, evaluate new and persistent eyelid changes and take time to explain what the examination reveals.

For a new eyelid droop, call before arriving so the team can help determine the safest next step.

🚨 Sudden Blurry Vision? Don’t Wait It Out

Sudden blurry vision should never be ignored.

First, notice whether the change affects one eye or both. Also watch for eye pain, redness, new flashes or floaters, a dark curtain or shadow, weakness, numbness, balance problems, facial drooping, or difficulty speaking.

Possible causes range from an ocular-surface problem or migraine to acute glaucoma, retinal disease, blood-sugar changes, or impaired circulation. Some require treatment quickly to protect vision or address a broader medical emergency.

New flashes, a sudden increase in floaters, or a curtain over your vision require immediate evaluation for a possible retinal tear or detachment.

If vision changes occur with stroke-like symptoms, call 911 immediately—even if the symptoms improve or disappear.

For an isolated sudden vision change, call an eye doctor right away for appropriate triage.

👁️ A sudden change in vision cannot be diagnosed by appearance or symptoms alone.

👁 A Whole Eye Was Transplanted—So Why Couldn’t It See?

A whole human eye has now been transplanted—but restoring vision remains a far greater challenge.

In 2023, surgeons performed the first combined whole-eye and partial-face transplant. One year later, the transplanted eye remained viable, with blood flow to the retina and measurable retinal responses to light. However, the patient still had no light perception.

The central challenge is the optic nerve. It contains more than one million nerve fibers that transmit visual information from the retina to the brain. Once severed, those connections currently cannot be regenerated and properly reconnected well enough to restore sight.

Corneal transplantation is different. It replaces damaged or diseased tissue at the clear front surface of the eye without requiring the optic nerve to be reconnected.

The milestone is extraordinary—but whole-eye transplantation is not currently a treatment for restoring vision.

👁️ Corneal disease can interfere with vision when the eye’s clear front surface becomes scarred, swollen, irregular, or cloudy.

Dr. Luis W. Lu and Dr. Andrew Lu provide comprehensive evaluations for corneal conditions and other causes of changing vision. When surgery or specialty treatment is required, they can explain the findings and appropriate next steps.
