Most unconscious patients will tolerate an OPA because the loss of consciousness is typically accompanied by a loss of protective airway reflexes and decreased muscle tone. As those muscles relax, the tongue can fall back and obstruct the airway, making an OPA an effective way to help maintain a patent airway.

⚠️ But don’t assume every unconscious patient is a candidate. If a gag reflex is still present, an OPA is contraindicated.
