October 25th is International Dwarfism Awareness Day! đź’š
Dwarfism is typically defined as an adult with a height of 4 feet 10 inches (147 cm) or less, resulting from a genetic or medical disorder. In 1957, Billy Barty organized a gathering of 20 little people in Reno, Nevada, which paved the way for the creation of Little People of America (LPA). Today, the LPA has grown into a massive national advocacy group with over 6,500 members across the United States.
Originally established in 2012, International Dwarfism Awareness Day was created by the LPA to honor the birthdate of Billy Barty. The day serves to promote inclusion, challenge social barriers, and celebrate the dwarfism community globally.
The 2026 theme is "Don't deny. Embrace." This message directly honors Barty's original mission: ensuring little people feel confident in their identities and can build supportive networks without feeling the need to blend in or hide who they are.
At Driver Rehabilitation Center of Excellence, our Driver Services & Vehicle Modification teams believe that empowerment and inclusion extend directly to independent mobility. Drivers with dwarfism often face unique vehicle accessibility hurdles, such as the ability to reach the pedals, maintaining a safe distance from the steering wheel airbag, and clear sightlines over the dashboard. Through comprehensive clinical and behind-the-wheel evaluations and custom vehicle modifications, including pedal extensions, heel shelves, hand controls, and specialized seating ergonomics, we provide tailored solutions that ensure comfort, safety, and lifelong driving independence.

To mark the day and celebrate Barty's birthday, the Dwarf Artist Coalition (DAC) and LPA are hosting a collaborative virtual community screening of the "How We Look" Project on October 25 at 8:00 PM EDT / 5:00 PM PDT. The event features three short films created entirely by performers and producers with dwarfism, highlighting authentic representation in media.
