Happy National Hospital Week! Did you know National Hospital Week dates back more than 100 years? In 1921, President Warren G. Harding established National Hospital Day on May 12—chosen to honor Florence Nightingale’s birthday. The idea came from Matthew O. Foley, editor of Hospital Management journal, who wanted to rebuild public trust in hospitals after the 1918 flu pandemic. Foley even wrote to Daniel Test, superintendent of Pennsylvania Hospital (founded in 1751 by Dr. Thomas Bond and Benjamin Franklin!) to help plan the very first hospital celebration. By 1953, Hospital Day expanded into the full week we know today. Today, we honor the caregivers, staff, and hospitals that have served communities for generations.
