Meet Brynne Gould, PT, DPT!

Brynne is a proud alumna of UNC’s DPT program and credits much of her confidence as a new graduate to the education she received from Neuro STEP UP.

Neuro STEP UP, building off the original MS STEP UP program (est 2008), is a two-year track focused on neurodegenerative diseases like MS, Parkinson’s, and ALS.

The program exists thanks to the generous support of Angela Rosenberg and Marty Rosenberg, who endowed the track in 2019 and continue to fuel the next generation of neurologic physical-therapy leaders.

Congratulations to Jasper Mark, a recent graduate of the PhD in Human Movement Science program, on the publication of "Advancing Stroke Recovery Through Operant Conditioning of Corticomuscular Coherence." This student-led project, completed in collaboration with Dr. Jessica Cassidy explores how operant conditioning of corticomuscular coherence may enhance neuroplasticity and improve motor recovery after stroke.

The Carolina Clinical Education Consortium (CCEC) is a group of academic partners from North Carolina and South Carolina PT and PTA programs as well as clinicians from rehab facilities in both North and South Carolina. Each year, academic partners nominate clinical sites that exhibit excellence in clinical instruction for students and support for their clinical instructors across the Carolinas, the consortium chooses one outstanding site from North Carolina and one from South Carolina.

This year, Jennifer Cooke, DCE in UNC’s Division of Physical Therapy, nominated UNC Home Health and the Consortium, selected UNC Home Health as its Clinical Site of the Year in North Carolina!

Ben Killen, a current student in the HMSC PhD program, received an Acute Care Promotion of Doctoral Studies (PODS) I scholarship for his project Perceptions of Effort During Gait for People Post Stroke. This is a very competitive and prestigious award for PhD students given by the Foundation for Physical Therapy Research that is generously supported by the APTA Acute Care. Congratulations to Ben on this well-deserved recognition and the impact of his work advancing stroke rehabilitation research!

In addition to providing exceptional patient care in the clinic, our residents play an active role in the education of future physical therapists by assisting in Applied Manual Therapy and Musculoskeletal I & II. Anna McLane, UNC DPT Alum’19, recently won the Outstanding Clinical Instructor Award at the Carolina Clinical Education Consortium spring conference. She shared that she “became a CI because of the awesome CIs that I had when I was a PT student. They were so patient, knowledgeable, and worked at the top of their license, and were great role models for me to learn from, and I hope to be that for PT students.”

Tim Eckard, the Director of the DPT program at UNC Chapel Hill, contributed to a recent publication. The research aimed to develop a method to identify individuals in military training at high risk for bone stress injuries. The findings add to a growing body of research focused on injury prevention and readiness of military trainees. Read more here:
