Situated on 120 wooded acres in Chapel Hill, Carol Woods is a not-for-profit continuing care retirement community that promotes an active lifestyle supported by the area’s educational, cultural and medical resources. A commitment to well-being and preventative care enables the 465 residents to pursue activities that support a sense of individual fulfillment and purpose. Carol Woods was founded in

1979 by a group of local residents wanting to retire in Chapel Hill. It is governed by a local, all-volunteer board of directors entrusted with ultimate fiduciary responsibility.

Celebrating Our Bright Lights!

After a pause since the COVID-19 pandemic, we were grateful to once again gather for the Bright Light Awards, a meaningful celebration honoring the extraordinary work of our Resident Life Specialists.

Made possible through the generosity of a resident donor, these awards recognize team members who embody the heart of their work: focusing on relationships rather than tasks, supporting the whole person, working as a team, and sharing their knowledge to help each resident live a meaningful and fulfilling life. This year, we celebrated four outstanding recipients:

Latasha was recognized for her organization, efficiency, and ability to provide care with both purpose and grace. She consistently takes time to connect with residents, helping them feel valued and part of a family.

Zsa Zsa was honored for her remarkable attention to detail and her deep understanding of residents’ unique routines and needs. Her patience, empathy, and compassion help residents feel safe, supported, and truly known.

Irene was celebrated for her positive spirit and genuine care. A true ray of sunshine, she brings warmth and compassion to her work each day and is always willing to support both residents and teammates.

Nichole was recognized for the genuine relationships she builds with residents. She takes the time to learn what matters to them, encourages connection and conversation, and brings humor and joy to everyday interactions.

Together, these four honorees represent what it means to care for the whole person and to focus on relationships, not just tasks. Their dedication, compassion, teamwork, and commitment to knowing residents as individuals reflect the very best of what it means to be a Resident Life Specialist.

Congratulations to Latasha, Zsa Zsa, Irene, and Nichole! We are so grateful for the light you bring to Carol Woods and to the lives of the residents you serve!

Some of the most meaningful friendships at Carol Woods span generations. 💚

Through our growing intergenerational programs, residents are building genuine relationships with children that enrich the lives of everyone involved.

✨ Little School Visits
Twice each week, preschoolers from The Little School join residents on campus for art, gardening, music, games, reading, and conversation. What begins as a simple activity often blossoms into heartfelt friendships filled with laughter, curiosity, and shared joy.

📚 Reading Buddies at Northside Elementary
Twice each month, resident volunteers visit Northside Elementary to read with first-grade students. Each gathering includes a themed story, hands-on learning, and one-on-one reading time with their consistent "grandfriend," creating meaningful connections while fostering a love of literacy.

These experiences remind us that learning truly goes both ways. Our residents share their wisdom, talents, and life experiences, while children bring fresh perspectives, endless curiosity, and contagious joy. Together, they create memories that leave lasting impressions on every generation.

🐝 National Pollinator Week is June 22–28, and at Carol Woods, we think that's something to buzz about!
Sustainability is one of our core values, and supporting pollinators is an important part of that commitment. Our campus is home to magnificent 200+ year-old oak trees—keystone species that provide food and habitat for an incredible variety of pollinators, birds, and wildlife.
Across our arboretum, we're continually looking for ways to make our landscape more pollinator-friendly. From replacing invasive plants with native species, to relocating and expanding pollinator gardens, to establishing native thickets that provide shelter and food for wildlife, every project helps create a healthier, more vibrant ecosystem.
The best part? It takes a community. Residents, staff, and interest groups all help support the habitats that make Carol Woods such a special place for people and pollinators alike.

☀️🍴🚚 Kicking off summer the best way we know how, good food and great company!

Yesterday, our Dining Department partnered with Performance Food Group to bring a food truck experience directly to our community. Residents and staff were treated to a complimentary lunch, enjoying freshly prepared food, time together, and the opportunity to connect outside of their daily routines! The afternoon was filled with good conversation, smiling faces, and the kind of moments that turn ordinary days into special memories.

Carol Woods was honored to serve as a Platinum Sponsor of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP’s 2026 Defenders of Civil Rights Luncheon this past weekend, an event that recognizes individuals whose dedication to equity, educational opportunity, and social justice has made a lasting impact on our community. Proceeds from the luncheon support the NAACP’s educational initiatives and scholarships for local youth.

This year’s event was especially meaningful for Carol Woods as two of our residents, Adam Stein and Jane Stein, were honored among the 2026 Defenders of Civil Rights.

Throughout his distinguished career, Adam Stein has helped advance civil rights, voting rights, school integration, health rights, and fair representation across North Carolina. Jane Stein has dedicated her life to education, civil rights research, global health, and community empowerment, helping expand opportunities through her work in educational equity, community outreach, and cultural understanding.

Their accomplishments exemplify the profound impact that committed individuals can have on the greater community. At Carol Woods, we are continually inspired by residents whose lives of service, leadership, and advocacy extend far beyond our campus and leave a lasting legacy throughout the region.

Congratulations to Adam and Jane on this well-deserved recognition. We are grateful to celebrate their accomplishments and to support the important work of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP.

Yesterday, our community came together to celebrate two incredible leaders. We were grateful to welcome Tom Akins, President & CEO of LeadingAge NC, to campus to personally present these awards.

John P. “Jack” Evans received the Excellence in Governance Award in recognition of his years of faithful leadership and service to Carol Woods. Through 18 years of service on our Board spanning four different decades, Jack has helped guide and strengthen our community with wisdom, integrity, and deep commitment to our mission. His impact continues to be felt throughout Carol Woods.

Bas Kimlinger received the Service Excellence Award. Bas is known for the care, pride, and dedication he brings to our campus each day. His work not only enhances the beauty of Carol Woods, but also contributes to the comfort, safety, and well-being of everyone who calls this community home.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate Jack and Bas and thankful for the leadership, service, and heart they pour into Carol Woods every day!

Today, we celebrate the natural beauty that surrounds and sustains our community. From the peaceful reflections at our pond to the winding paths across our 120-acre campus, nature is at the heart of daily life here.

With 65% tree canopy coverage, our grounds provide a thriving environment for both residents and wildlife alike. We are proud to be recognized as a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat, hold a Platinum designation as a Bird Friendly Habitat by the New Hope Audubon Society, and to be a Level II Accredited Arboretum.

These honors reflect our ongoing commitment to stewardship, conservation, and creating spaces where people and nature flourish together!

This past week, we were honored to serve as a sponsor of the NC HOSA State Leadership Conference, an inspiring gathering of students who are already taking meaningful steps toward careers in health and service to others. Throughout the conference, we had the privilege of connecting with young people who are not only academically driven, but deeply motivated by a desire to make a difference in the lives of others.

At Carol Woods, cultivating pathways into health careers is part of our broader commitment to community and purpose. We believe in creating spaces where learning, mentorship, and real human connection come together, because healthcare is not just a profession, it is a relationship.

We are grateful to have been part of this experience and to support students as they continue to discover where their paths may lead!
