A lot of parents come in describing the same dynamic.

The kid who was fine five minutes ago is now melting down over something that seems completely minor.

The advice they've gotten is usually some version of:

• Be more consistent
• Give consequences
• Don't give in

This isn't wrong exactly.

It's just working on the surface of something that goes a lot deeper.

The meltdown over the shoes isn't about the shoes.

It's the fourth demand in ten minutes landing on a brain that was already overwhelmed before it got out of bed.

Consequences don't directly speak to that.

Learning to read what's happening underneath changes everything about how you respond. 💛

This is what rejection sensitivity can feel like for a lot of people with ADHD.

Not “too sensitive.”
Not attention-seeking.
Not overreacting.

Your nervous system may just register social pain more intensely than other people realize.

So a short text, a weird tone, or feeling left out can hit way harder than it “should.”

Understanding that doesn’t magically make the feeling disappear.

But it can help you stop seeing yourself as the problem. 🌊

ADHD shows up in relationships in ways that rarely get talked about.

Not just the "forgot your anniversary" stuff.

The way you can be fully present one minute and completely unreachable the next.

Or the way a small conflict can spike into full-body overwhelm before you've even processed what happened.

Partners, friends and family often experience the inconsistency without understanding what's driving it.

And a lot of people with ADHD spend years thinking they're just bad at relationships.

They're not.

Understanding that changes the conversation.

For a long time, ADHD advice for adults sounded like:

"Make a list."
"Set a timer."
"Just start with one thing."

And sure, those things can help.

But they don't address the situation at its core.

ADHD isn't a productivity problem with a productivity solution.

It's a nervous system that experiences things differently than most systems were built to accommodate. Most advice isn't designed for the ADHD brain.

Understanding that doesn't fix everything.

But it changes what you will be working on. 💛

At Third Wave, we take mental health seriously.
Ourselves? Slightly less seriously. ✨

Therapy can feel intimidating enough already. We believe the people helping you should feel approachable, human, and safe to actually be around. 🌊

Being a therapist on social media is weirdly vulnerable 😂

You spend years learning how to stay grounded, professional, and emotionally attuned… and then one day you’re filming reels, lip syncing trending audio, and hoping Instagram doesn’t tank your reach for fun.

But honestly? Therapy should feel more human.

People are exhausted by cold, overly clinical mental health content that sounds like a textbook instead of a real conversation. Social media gives therapists a chance to make therapy feel more approachable, relatable, and less intimidating for the people who probably need it most.

If being a little awkward online helps someone:
• finally reach out for therapy
• feel less alone
• understand anxiety, ADHD, trauma, grief, or burnout a little better
• realize therapy doesn’t have to feel stiff or scary

…then we’ll survive the secondhand embarrassment 🤝

And yes, Andrew would still appreciate your like. 😂

Ever laid in a room full of strangers listening to crystal bowls and somehow walked out feeling like your nervous system got a software update? 😅✨

A few things you might experience during a sound bath:

• Deep relaxation

• Emotional release

• Random memories/thoughts surfacing

• Feeling grounded and calm

• Falling asleep (honestly… common)

Our next Sound Bath is happening Wednesday, May 28 at 6:15 PM at our Midtown Raleigh office and it’s the perfect excuse to slow down for a second and let your brain breathe. 🌊

Bring a blanket, pillow, eye mask, cozy socks… whatever helps you feel comfy and settled. We’ll take care of the rest. 🤍

No experience needed. No pressure to “do it right.” Just come as you are.

✨ Spots are limited. DM us or check the link in bio to reserve yours.

What if therapy wasn’t just for falling apart?
What if it was also for becoming?

People think therapy is only about crisis. Sometimes it’s also about having someone in your corner while your life slowly starts becoming yours again.

And honestly? That part’s pretty cool too.

Follow for therapy that actually feels human.
