ICYMI: H. Kay Chung, PhD, received a Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Synthetic Biology Award to rewire T cell signaling in cancer, enabling T cells to reinterpret tumor-derived cues and sustain anti-tumor activity.

The award will help fund the amazing work that continues to come out of the Chung lab! 👏 https://www.med.unc.edu/cellbiophysio/rewiring-t-cell-signals-in-cancer/

20-year-old UNC-Chapel Hill sophomore Caroline Robinson didn’t expect that a small lump on her neck noticed during a visit with family would change everything. Just days later, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma and began chemotherapy.

What followed was six months of grueling treatment, long days at the hospital, and overwhelming side effects. She spent every other Friday in infusion chairs from morning to evening, while at home her family helped manage her care around the clock. But despite the physical and emotional toll, Caroline decided to stay in school.

She continued attending classes Monday through Thursday, balancing a demanding pre-nursing course load with treatment. Against all odds, she finished the semester with a 4.0 GPA.

As a young adult patient, Caroline experienced firsthand the unique challenges of navigating cancer care between pediatric and adult care. Through UNC Health’s Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Program, she received support tailored to patients her age while also managing difficult side effects, including hormone treatments to protect her fertility that caused hot flashes.

As a junior, Caroline spent her spring semester studying abroad in Ireland, wanting to escape the shadow of the last six months. She had a wig and the scar from a port, but her eyebrows and lashes grew back.

Caroline graduated in May with her nursing degree—bringing with her something you can’t learn in a classroom: the lived experience of being a patient.

“I wouldn’t say if I could do it all over again, what I went through is what I’d want,” she said. “But I’m so grateful now for the experience that I did have and the way it’s connected me to a whole community that I would’ve never even been able to understand or really be involved with.”

Caroline’s story is a powerful reminder of resilience, determination, and the profound impact of turning personal challenges into purpose. You can read the full story by clicking the link in our comments section. 💙

When a Mom or Dad gets cancer, the entire family is affected. A UNC School of Medicine psychologist developed a website that provides parents personalized guidance to explain a diagnosis to their children.

For families with children at home, one of the hardest parts can be explaining a cancer diagnosis in a way kids can understand. Now, a new website is giving parents personalized guidance for that conversation.

A new study, led by researchers in the lab of Blossom Damania, PhD, has identified a new therapeutic target for difficult-to-treat cases of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

“Our research indicates that targeting a single enzyme may offer a more effective approach for the treatment of EBV-positive NHL," said Maria White, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher in the Damania lab and lead author on the paper.
