When emotions feel overwhelming, sometimes we need to regulate before we can problem-solve.

A.C.C.E.P.T.S. is a distress-tolerance skill from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) that uses healthy, intentional distraction to help you get through emotionally intense moments. The goal isn’t to avoid your feelings forever. It’s more like: “I’m too overwhelmed to deal with this effectively right now. I can come back to it when I’m more regulated.”

Therapy can help you recognize when you need to process an emotion versus when you need to regulate first, and help you build coping strategies that actually work for you.

Your nervous system isn't supposed to be calm 24/7. We wish, right? 😅

Being regulated doesn’t mean you’re always calm, happy, or unbothered. Regulation is being able to experience stress and big emotions without feeling completely hijacked by them and being able to find your way back when things settle.

You’re going to have hard days. You’re going to get overwhelmed. The goal isn’t constant calm. It’s learning how to move through what you feel without letting it run the whole show 😌

🛑 Stop scrolling: how many trips did you make through your house today just to find things you just had in your hand? 🚶‍♀️🔁 Phone, hair clip, beverage #1, beverage #2...

Enter: The House Bag. 👜✨
(Huge shoutout to adult ADHD TikTok for this piece of wizardry)

It’s beautifully lazy: put your daily survival kit in a tote and carry it room to room.

• WFH? Laptop charger, sticky notes, snacks. Done.
• Hobby hour? Yarn, hooks, book. Mobile cozy station loaded.
• Just existing? Phone, water bottle, mystery item from the floor.

Reducing brain clutter isn't always about deep meditation, sometimes it’s just not losing your chapstick 6 times before noon. 💆‍♀️

Picture of my own House Bag and Malla just because.. 💕🐶

As Appalachian Therapy approaches its 3-year anniversary this September, I’ve been doing a little behind-the-scenes housekeeping. 🧹✨

As many of you have probably noticed, healthcare costs and insurance plans have been changing significantly across the country. Copays, deductibles, premiums, and insurance reimbursement rates can all change from year to year, making the financial side of mental healthcare more complicated for both clients and providers.

For therapists, this has also meant navigating reduced reimbursement, delayed insurance payments, and increasing difficulty maintaining sustainable practices. Enforcing financial policies is one of the less comfortable parts of running a private practice. Most of us would much rather focus on therapy than billing 😅 But clear, consistent policies are important for keeping a small practice sustainable and allowing us to continue serving our communities.

Because of these changes, I’ve made some updates to my practice policies and billing processes. These updates will take effect September 1st, and current clients will receive the updated information through the Client Portal. Please keep an eye out for anything that needs to be reviewed or signed.

I know nobody gets particularly excited about paperwork (myself included 😂), but these changes are intended to keep things clear and sustainable.

Thank you for your patience as I get everything updated and thank you for being part of my private practice. Three years already?! 🥹💛

✨️ Knowing therapy words isn’t the same as doing the therapy ✨️

Self-awareness isn’t just knowing your strengths and weaknesses or thinking about yourself a lot. It’s noticing your patterns, recognizing what you’re feeling while you’re feeling it, understanding how your actions affect other people, and paying attention to whether your choices actually line up with what matters to you.
And sometimes self-awareness means being willing to hear something about yourself that you don’t particularly like. 😬

Growth isn’t always comfortable. But being able to pause, get curious, and say “Hmm… maybe there’s something here for me to look at” is where a lot of meaningful change begins.

✨️ Our thoughts can feel true without actually being true ✨️

Ever feel like your brain is your worst enemy? Same, same. It's wild in there and sometimes I pretend my thoughts are frankly none of my business 🤣

Cognitive distortions are patterns of thinking that can cause us to interpret situations in ways that aren’t completely accurate. We all do it sometimes, especially when we’re stressed, anxious, hurt, or overwhelmed. Things like catastrophizing, black-and-white thinking, mind reading, fortune telling, emotional reasoning, and overgeneralizing can quietly shape how we see ourselves, other people, and the world around us.

Therapy isn’t about forcing yourself to “think positive” or pretending difficult things aren’t happening. It’s about learning to notice your thought patterns, question them, and consider whether there might be another way to understand what’s happening. With practice, you can learn to respond to your thoughts instead of automatically believing every thought that shows up.

Sometimes the hardest part is realizing, “Oh… my brain does this A LOT.” 😂 Therapy can give you a safe place to recognize those patterns, understand where they come from, and practice responding differently.

📚 Back to school is here… and apparently parents need a transition plan, too (I know I do, I hate this time of year 🤣)

Nearly 9 out of 10 parents report feeling stressed about back-to-school season, and 40% say their mental load is higher during the school year. The biggest culprit? Managing all those schedules and routines.

Between homework, activities, appointments, work, school emails, and trying to remember which day is picture day, it’s a lot. So if you're feeling a little overwhelmed, you're not failing. You're coordinating an entire small civilization.

And if you've been thinking, “I really should get back into therapy…” maybe this is your sign. You don't have to wait until you're completely burned out to ask for support 🫶🏻

Take care of the kids. Pack the lunches. Find the missing shoe. And somewhere in there, take care of yourself, too ❤️
