People often ask me why I travel alone.

The question is usually wrapped in concern.

Wouldn’t it be more fun with someone else?

Aren’t you lonely?

Isn’t it dangerous?

What they’re really asking is something else:

Why would you choose to experience something this big by yourself?

For a while, I couldn’t quite figure out how to get back on the water.

Part of it was practical—how exactly does one person get a 65lb kayak onto the roof of a 4Runner?

But part of it was something else.

Sometimes the first thing you do alone after a relationship ends isn’t just about the thing itself. It’s about proving to yourself that the life you love still belongs to you.

In case you missed it, for the past two years I’ve been building the Sober Hang community.

The Sober Hang is a Twin Cities community for women who are sober, sober-curious, or simply looking for connection beyond alcohol.

We’re more than a meetup group. We’re creating space for real conversation, new friendships, creativity, adventure, and proof that life can be full, fun, and meaningful without drinking.

From coffee chats and hikes to art projects, book discussions, roller skating, paddleboarding, and spontaneous adventures, The Sober Hang is about showing up as you are and finding your people along the way.

No pressure. No preaching. No perfect sobriety required.

Just women connecting, creating, and thriving—one hang at a time.

✨ Twin Cities, Minnesota
✨ Women-centered
✨ Alcohol-free
✨ New members always welcome

Find us on the Meetup app, or DM for a link to join💜

I don’t remember the first time I felt diminished for wanting something bigger.

It wasn’t one catastrophic moment. No one sat me down and said, “You don’t get to want that kind of life.”

It was accumulation.

It was the words.

I know what it’s like to be lonely, even when you’re surrounded by people — your partner, your children, your friends.

I know what it’s like to feel empty even though, from the outside, everything looks full.

Because fine isn’t the neutral answer I thought it was. It’s avoidance. It’s the beginning of drifting from the things that matter.

The moment when you trade presence for escape.

Not a dramatic escape. Just a subtle step sideways.

I don’t feel lost. I feel undiscovered.
Like I’m hiding some big secret.

Like I did all this work to get sober and here I am no longer glittery, but dull and unmoored, resigned to living life in beige.

The truth is, this manifesto was never meant to be the destination.

It was the clearing.

And if I’m honest, I was the one who needed to be cleared….

“Sobriety doesn’t take away women’s emotions — it gives them back in full force: the anger, the grief, the longing, the desire. That’s why it feels messy — because it’s real.”
— Holly Whitaker, Quit Like a Woman

A numb woman is easier to manage.
A present woman is not.

In order to function, the patriarchy needs women to be distracted. And, there’s a dizzying array of substances and behaviors designed to help with that: alcohol, shopping, scrolling, over-functioning, over-consuming, over-performing.

Sobriety interrupts the spell.
